you can get handheld LCD scopes for not a lot of money. PartExpress used to have one... velleman IIRC, for ~$200. We use handheld ExTech models here for around $400.
if it's under 20khz there is freeware out there that will allow you to use the audio port (in) on a laptop... you have to build your own probes.
handheld lcd decent for most general use unless you start building advanced stuff.
and yes, the tube-fired heathkit o-scope that I had in my garage always got a lot of comments. i bought it at a hamfest for $20 years ago. Really enjoyed having it when working out small analog circuits!
