Are there any alternatives you would recommend to a Fram PH8170 or Briggs and Stratton 492932 oil filter for a 25 hp V-twin Briggs and Stratton engine? At ~ $12-15 it looks as if these filters are relatively expensive because they are so short and have few applications. It looks like I can fit a 1-1.5" longer filter. Does anyone have a list of cross references for slightly longer filters?

Try a PH3614. It's about 3/4" longer.

Super Tech (a.k.a Napa Select) ST3614 will run about $3

Why go for a longer filter of inferior construction? The PH8170 is very well built: metal end caps and all.

How much filter volume does a little Briggs honestly need?

I made a list years ago using Purolator numbers:

Stock size (X-Small) - L35310

Small - L10241

Medium - L20195

Large - L30001

X-Large - L40017

I typically run the L10241 (uses 2 quarts right on the nose). Convert to any filter manufacturer you prefer.

That's what I was thinking. I can probably get a toughguard TG3614 for less than the cost of a PH8170. I'm pretty certain the toughguard is a better filter too.

I have the toughguard on as we speak. Even with the terrible regular Canadian prices, it was much cheaper and according to the filter dissections on this site they are a well built filter that, in my mind will have no issues running stock or longer changes.

I have yet to see a toughguard or Ultra with torn media or in general garbage construction. I will run the TG for the 100 hour index and rip it open to have a look.

The Fram 3600 or Purolator 20195 may fit,
same base as the 3614, but nearly five inches long,
The 3614 is three and a half inches long,

It also holds eight more ounces of oil, the 3614 holds four more...

I run the AutoZone STP blue S3600 on my Craftsman LT200 lawn tractor,

It does NOT need a bigger filter. He explained his purpose very clearly:

I think a $3 super tech will be just fine, I've been running ST3614's on big Briggs, Onan and Kohler engines for years and years and years ......

After hours of screwing around trying to save $6 I went to Home Depot and bought a nice heavy well made, B&S filter for my 20HP TWIN. I sleep well and will change it at ~ the 50 hours as recommended. You can op for a long life B&S filter, but, it is much more expensive. Ed
