I have never heard of anything like that. The main thing is your ok. It just shows you can never be too careful.
I'm almost certain that his age was somehow related to this episode....he almost certainly hit the gas NOT the brakes !
If you want something done right you have to do it yourself, that includes lifting a car....

The result could have been fatal, as you said.
You didn't really do anything wrong, you just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The older guy obviously had never driven a car up onto ramps before, and didn't want to admit that he wasn't sure what to do.
My wife often drives cars onto ramps for me, but she is both younger and probably a better driver than this guy.

Even in shopping centers it seems like every week on the news some old person accidentally mistakes the gas pedal for the brake and goes crashing through a store front.

Son's boss was killed by a elderly 83 year old lady that T-Bone him on his motorcycle. She blew a stop sign and drugged the guy almost half a mile before stopping. Was a big "to do" in the community as the old lady was never charged with vehicular manslaughter because of looking like everybody's cute innocent grandma. A year earlier, they threw the book at a 16 year old kid who had done a like thing.

I'll have my wife line the ramps up in the garage for me sometimes, but once I'm at the ramp, I have her to move to the side. I know I won't floor the accelerator, and I've actually got my foot riding the brake also, but you just never know with machines. Better safe than sorry.

Yikes! Good to hear you survived. I don't know if I've ever stood in front of a vehicle going onto ramps, but I don't think I ever will after hearing this. It can be very tricky to get on ramps if you're unfamiliar with them. I've watched a couple of friends take a few tries before letting me take over. I could even imagine an ex-girlfriend or two driving off the edge and landing on the rocker panels if I left it up to them. But this guy's mind is obviously not functioning well enough to drive safely anymore!

As a kid (8 years old or so) I used to ride to town on parts runs with my grandfather in his old Datsun pickup, and would have to check the driver side direction for him because he couldn't turn his head far enough to see, and on occasion would have to help him turn the wheel because the Datsun didn't have power steering and he didn't have the strength to do it himself. Looking back on this as an adult is frightening, to say the least. It wasn't until I related this to my mother (unwittingly, of course) that she and my grandmother essentially FORCED him to stop driving.
That said, I'm all for more stringent licensing protocols across the board, to make it more difficult for those who can't/shouldn't operate a motor vehicle to do so, young and old alike. The Germans in particular are a model for this, and making licenses more difficult and more expensive to attain would only dissuade those with marginal abilities from attempting the task. Of course, public transportation would also have to come a long way to allow those who couldn't drive to function as productive members of society, so the likelyhood of any of this happening is slim to none, and slim just left town.

It's obviously a case of unintended acceleration, since he is positive he hit the brake pedal. I'm sure he was driving a Toyota too, you know how those cars are. Could never have been the driver's fault, the car was obviously maliciously designed and I hope he is getting a lawyer right now.

I remember as a young kid, dad made me sit near center of the seat on the ol Chevy truck. He would stomp down on the clutch and I would operate the floor shifter. All because he wasn't going to loose grip of his beer. But when he needed another, the stash sat on my right and it was also my job to get a fresh brew for him.
Can't believe how many times we went through that. I also figured out why we never went fishing close to town, always a couple hours drive because of how much beer was in the stash.
Then sometimes we got to the lake, stopped, looked, then he would say "I don't see fish jumping, maybe next time". That seem to only happen when the stash was low by the time we got there.

Glad you are ok , I have narrowly escaped death or severe dismemberment 3 times in my 30 year career as a heavy duty mechanic ,, once my mistake twice someone elses
