If someone put jackstands on sand and got crushed under their car, would you say that jackstands were somehow dangerous because of that incident? I'm grateful the OP survived but this near-miss was caused by carelessness not the ramps. Never stand in the path of a moving vehicle

Really glad you're alright, bud!

This is unbelievable. If I hit the "brakes" and the car accelerated, I'd take my foot off the "brakes" and try again. Panic makes us all respond in funnny ways, but I can't say that I've ever been in a situation where the stopping of what I was inadvertently doing didn't lessen the severity of the accident/damage. In this case, taking his foot off the "brakes" could have been the difference between broken bones and death if you'd been doing this in your garage, with nothing but a solid wall between you and the car.

Yup, I always try to stand to the side when guiding a car. Told my kids "don't stand in front of a car, don't stand behind a car, that's the direction they're designed to go" (don't know if they listened). It always give me the creeps when I see someone at the local carnival (or wherever) standing between the cars, guiding the next one into a parking spot... Glad you're OK.

Glad your o.k. That's one thing I like about having truck-based SUV's (and of course trucks) is that you can get under them without jacking them up. I do need a little lift to get under my MIL's Santa Fe, I just put a 2X4 under each tire and it gives me the extra clearance I need. I have a set of ramps but I've never been fond of them.

Yikes!!! good thing you were not trying to get him to ramp up in the garage or he might have put you in the house.
Tell him his turn is next - you own him one (jk)

Glad he didn't take you out

Holy khrap! Did you bust through the fence with your arse? Glad everyone is OK. Note to self; Real old dude + big car = stand clear.

Joel

Thanks for putting my weekly woes in perspective and thank goodness for the outcome.

I have been through hundreds of hours of safety training at my work place, but was never reminded of standing aside during these types of situations. Amazing (and embarrassing).

Thanks for the lesson. I may submit this story at our annual meeting.

Now you know why elderly people are always driving through store-fronts across the country. Those that do that, do not have the brain-muscular link to maintain a consistent, graduated control of the vehicle. Reality dictates that the elderly man should have slammed on the brakes in a near instantaneous fashion but failed to do so. Not necessarily his fault since that is how cognitive abilities deteriorate over time in some elderly populations.

We are glad you survived to spread the word, since dead men tell no tales. Beware out there.

luck, faint, God looking out for you. when i was young, may be 10-12 my dad told me " never get in front of a car or gun". lost my father-in-law cause of ramps. the shouse family NEVER used ramps, and NEVER will. when you have stared death in the face, you have a different out look on life. man o man it is GREAT you are still hear. we cant afford to loose any good guys.

I agree, I tried once before and didn't like it because I almost drove off the ramp. It may be easy if you had it done many times, but first time was scary and no more ramp for me.

Holey moley. So did he hit the ramps? Did the ramps make it?

South Park's "Grey dawn" episode's gonna hit close to home.
