Air Filter Seal Use Water

I could quite find anything like this but I thought I would try it. On my 03 Camry the silicone was a little high after only 10000 mi on the NAPA Gold air filter. I cleaned it up and remember my Carpet Vacuum if I didn,t put water on the O rings it wouldn't suck. So I tryed spraying water all around the seal and hope it helps.

I don't know if I'd want to possibly introduce H2O into my intake and MAF sensors. If anything, apply a slight coat of grease on it.
 
I wonder if my Shimano Lithium based (reel drag) grease would work in this application?

Seeing how much sand I drive through I am afraid to send in my last sample

I think I will do this before I run the truck again.

You ingest water everyday if you drive through a rainstorm so a little bit of water wouldn't hurt.
 
Don't think how water could seal the gap ,some people use a heavy grease,I have been using rtv "silicone sealant" I lube the mating area so the rtv is easy to remove at filter changing time.

Hopefully you don't have a car with an oxygen sensor that you're using this method on...RTV fumes inhaled thru the engine will attatch to the O2 sensor eventually rendering it useless or making it slower to respond.
Whether the tube says "sensor safe" or not, it's still not advisable to use it on anything on the intake side of your engine. I've seen lots of driveability problems that have stemmed from using RTV sealant on some part of the intake on a vehicle.

Had 130,000 miles on my ex 1988 Camry and 107,000 miles on my Toyota p/u the sensors still check better than the minimum cycle and volt check.

Yes you do.

When driving through a rainstorm your engine doesn't injest moisture laden air?

You think an air filter is a dehumidifier?
 
If putting water on the seal gets it to seal correctly, that is very temporary. The quantity of water in between the sealing surfaces will quickly drop as it evaporates, and then you are right back to where you started.

Light oil will last much longer, but is usually light enough that it will slowly get sucked out, and then you are right back to where you started.

Tacky grease is the only thing that will stay in place and actually continue working for an extended period of time. Don't put too much, whatever that may be, or you are going to get the excess sucked into the combustion chamber.

The best solution is still to find something that doesn't need to be "fixed" just to make it work like it should in the first place.

Yes, they both will work.

They are looking for a seal, not a glue.

So the question is how long do you need the seal to last? Water or oil wont last for very long, and then you are back to no seal at all. If you only need to obtain a seal for very short time, then water is fine.

By the time the water has evaporated off of the air filter perimeter, there will be a seal. The rubber will stick to the intake plastic.

I have done this several times and it works wonders. You literally have to peel the filter off when you replace it.

But that is not what I would have expected! How can something be different than what I expected!!

Thanks for info. So much of what is 'known' is just conjecture, guess I got caught on that one. My experience is with metal/metal seals in industry, so they cant respond the way you noticed. Now I know to consider that.
