Privacy while owning and using smart phones is a myth.
They’re scanning hashes, not the actual pictures themselves. Much quicker and easier that way, as they won’t know what the hash is encrypting unless they already have info on it. While I think child molesters should be fed feet first into a wood chipper, I still don’t like this. The problem here is that Apple is going to look through all of the pictures on your iPhone, and I assume pictures on their cloud servers tied to customer accounts. I'm not defending child molestors, I think they are scumbags, but the thought of a big corporation violating one's privacy to this extent should have most rational people more than a little concerned. I'm pretty sure that there are quite a few people (maybe the majority of people) that have pictures they would rather nobody else saw. This is exactly the same problem that Android users are facing with Google.
I agree with you, the thing is many companies already scans, Apple is just last to join the party. More or less they had too as everyone else already does. I dont like it, corporations becoming our police force/police state "for the public good" Its noble but ends up dangerous because not everything is always as it seems ... but you are free to not use their service and keep your stuff private, I suspect a noble cause like child abuse wont bother many people and Apples system will be the best it can be to protect users privacy. This does open the door to the next "noble" cause corporations will decide is for the good of the people though. They’re scanning hashes, not the actual pictures themselves. Much quicker and easier that way, as they won’t know what the hash is encrypting unless they already have info on it. While I think child molesters should be fed feet first into a wood chipper, I still don’t like this.
Tell us more please.I split up my work and fun stuff. All my naughty stuff is on one computer they can hack all they want but won't get to my work / finance / important document computer.
Well said and definitely not a subject I am well educated on. Definitely a "layman" on the subject.I guess Apple users can choose not to upgrade to IOS-15. The fact that the scan compares hashes to known problematic pictures is, I think, meaningless, as that is the "end step". There is a risk that if one has a similar photo that is not the same, it can still be flagged by the IOS. The IOS compares what your pics "look like" in much the same way that it finds people, boats, airplanes and any other thing that can be searched. It IS searching your photos.
From Apple: "An iPhone or other device will analyze user photos, compute a NeuralHash, and look up "the entry in the blinded hash table." The device "also uses the blinded hash that the system looked up to obtain a derived encryption key" and uses that encryption key "to encrypt the associated payload data.""
That is well said, alarmguy; and I believe you understand clearly how the balance between convenience/ service and security/ privacy needs to be navigated skilfully. And that different businesses with different business models and revenue streams are going to position themselves in different places on that spectrum. And also that consumers have a choice - a choice no more or less informed than the choices consumers make about all manner of products and services we contract - about whom we deal with and what they're provided and what they're receiving in return.Bottom line is, if you are going to store information on someone else's servers chances are your information, in this case photos, is being scanned.
It’s like an optical contusion
Privacy is only an illusion

Sounds like they "got ya" ... you do have a choice if you allow google and other major corporations into your life, your family and children's lives and share every intimate detail of it with them. Im good with that if that is what people choose and lets face it, the majority doesnt care to learn and know. There's only way of getting 100% privacy. Going back to caveman regime. They got ya already.
Even if someone does .... "Some of your privacy" is not anywhere near giving up all your privacy unchecked to huge corporations like google and facebook. Allowing the use of your private information to be harvested from your family, packaged and sold off, again, unchecked.one question-- do you have grocery rebate cards, or do you participate in some consumer programs?
if yes, they you already gave up some of your privacy.
because for registration, some personal info is required...
Maybe not yet, but they will. People talk about how terrible China's "community credit score" is if you don't tow the government line, but similar is happening in USA. Credit cards and other businesses will already cancel your accounts if they don't like something such as your political opinions. Youtube, Twitter, etc, will cancel you for similar. The ADL just teamed up with Paypal to watch your speech and purchases and will cancel you if they don't like what political etc groups you support. Land of the Free yet the ADL is in charge of your internet purchases.Did you read the article though? Nobody is looking at pictures unless their software detects it as inappropriate child content.
If you have no problem with a corporation having full intimate access to you, your family, and your children personal information that’s fine with me.Your username "Alarmguy" is apt.
To me, the larger and more important issue, is, how likely is a site that is handling your data, to be compromised? Google employs one of the largest, if not the largest, security research teams of any company in the world. I'd rather trust them then a bunch of CERN dorks pet mail project, but that's just me.
I did decide to try out Privacy Badger after all. It only broke a couple of my sites. But it's mainly blocking tracking cookies that I was already blocking. So anyway.
Doesn't Apple have that same access? If you have no problem with a corporation having full intimate access to you, your family, and your children personal information that’s fine with me.
To me that is no different then people who feel safe and secure living in a marxist country.
And for the record I have no idea what apt. means.
But I can say one thing based on some posts in here, people will always make an excuse to either be lazy or take the easy way out Or again trust some higher authority with their personal lives.
