Advance Auto Parts is closing more than 700 locations to shore up the company’s finances following another dismal earnings report.

The car parts retailer, which has about 5,000 stores, said Thursday that the closures are part of its “strategic plan to improve business performance.” Advance Auto Parts shares slid nearly 5% in premarket trading after it reported earnings that missed analysts’ expectations.

The reduction will result in closing roughly 500 corporate-owned stores plus about 200 independently operated locations. The company did not immediately provide a full list of locations set to close.

In my immediate area, there are 3 AAP's, and only one of them is worth keeping open.

If you need a part, just assume to plan on going to that one store to get it, because unless it is a really common part, the other two simply won't stock it.

Do AutoZone and O'Reilly take used oil? I've never asked mine.

Something as simple as spark plugs for my truck

NGK Laser Iridium 92145

Advance: $13.49
Rock Auto: $6.54

Literally half the price, plus I've got 16 of them. And how many people need spark plugs in a pinch that would warrant going to a store to pick them up.

Oil is another catastrophe. $10-15/5qt for the exact same oil as Walmart. Think what you want, but why would you waste money. Walmart oil is perfectly fine.

RockAuto is great however if you need a part in middle of repair you need a place hopefully relatively locally.

Rock auto is a big enough parts retailer to where I'd be surprised if they didn't have a direct agreement with ngk to sell their stuff on their site. But anything's possible.

I shop online just like most of you but I suspect that we will not be happy when running down to our local auto parts store is no longer an option.

They looked pretty legit to me.

Both Denso and NGK have published information that helps a buyer identify counterfeit plugs. Just Google "How to identify fake or counterfeit spark plugs" and you'll find plenty of general and specific information.

I shop online just like most of you but I suspect that we will not be happy when we can no longer run down to our local auto parts store.

AAP isn't the only place in town. We have a NAPA which opened up about a year ago with competent help, and better pricing than AAP. I don't see online purchasing as my only option anytime soon.

I find that to be true also but when they have a bundle deal, I get a filter for free and then a SpeedPerks coupon for $5.00 on the next purchase. Plus they take my used oil with no hassle what so ever. When all is said and done it's the same price or better as Walmart.

A couple of years ago, my wife and daughter went to the Taylor Swift concert at MetLife Stadium here in NJ on a Sunday night. About 6 pm, they call me and tell me the battery went dead and nothing works and the windows are down. Being a good husband and father, no choice but to try to get a battery, shoot over to the stadium and change it out so I can go home and sleep in peace without worrying. So, I gather some tools, my son, some cash in case I have to try to bribe my way into the stadium parking lot and off we go to Advance, thankfully still open at 7 pm on a Sunday, to buy a battery. When I gave him the car info and tell him my tale of woe, he tells me there are two different size batteries for that car, do I know which one is in there. Nope, not a clue. This guy offers to sell me one of the batteries but let me take both so I know one will fit. He was literally going to let me walk out with a $200.00 battery without paying. I told him that was very generous of him but I need to pay for both and I'll bring the un-needed one back for a refund. I don't know if he was being foolish, or kind of old school, but I thought the offer was pretty neat. Got to the stadium, Troopers let me right in, empty spot right next to my wife's car, 10 minutes to swap out the battery and just as soon as I closed the hood, Taylor was taking the stage, the roar of the crowd was deafening! My son and I hung around for the next 20 minutes or so listening to the concert and then, off we went heroically, with the help of Advance Auto Parts, into the night.

I've been happy with the local O'Reilly's stores and would miss them if they'd close. There are two in my community, although I frequent the one closest to me. The service is friendly and helpful, some prices are the same as or better than online, and I can get what I need quickly and efficiently. Plus they have a great parking lot that allows easy access to the store. I'll be stopping by the store today or tomorrow to grab a couple of items.

They certainly fill a need for me. AAP has never worked for me under any circumstance, for any item. I will not miss them.
