I add moly (10% by weight) to my GL-5 gear oil (75W-140 BMW brand packaged for BMW by Golden Spectro) for use in my motorcycle transmission (straight cut gears, made by Getrag) and final drive (typical ring and pinion design). The transmission and final drive are separate reservoirs and the clutch is dry. BMW recommends 80W-90 or 90 weight GL-5 gear oil but sells the 75W-140 synthetic GL-5 as their premium gear oil.
I began using moly additive at early mileage (3000-4000) to improve shifting, reduce friction and heat and to preserve seals as well as reduce the possibility of failure of the large crown wheel ball bearing assembly in the final drive. These ball bearing have been known to fail causing considerable damage when the balls wad up due to a failed cage.
At 36,000 miles, I have no leaks, reduced noise and a smooth operating drive line.
Visitors to some of the motorcycle websites I frequent say that adding moly to GL-5 gear oil is not a wise practice.
