How can u tell apart a silicone and a nitrile adbv apart when u cut open a filter?

another question. when a adbv hardens, does it ever un-harden?

Usually a silcone ADBV is orange and a non-silicone one is black. They could theoretically make them other colors, but this seems to be what the manufactorers use.

No after it hardens it won't "un-harden". The rubber is damaged.

Color is just a visual indicator, you can't always count on it. Take a cigarette lighter to it, you'll see the difference. Have you seen the new silicone kitchen accessories like oven mitts/baking pans and hot pads for hot pans? They are soooo cool!

Sorry T, I just re-read your post- I agree with you, color is just an indicator
