I was reading all about the ADBV valve recently on here and having never experienced a problem with one before I wasn't quite sure what to listen for when the ADBV wasn't working properly. Well I do now. I just installed a Napa Gold filter at my last oil change and I have a pretty heavy amount of engine clatter (valve noise?) for the first 5-10 seconds after a cold start. I will be pulling off the Wix and going with a Super Tech from Wally World to see if the clatter goes away.

The Wix filters seemed to be pretty highly regarded around here so I thought I would give them a try. Unfortunately I am not impressed. Has anyone else has problems with the Wix filters?

my walmart is phasing out their ST filters in place of Frams. Isn't that nice. I just put the PURE 1 from Meijers on or Bosch from Auto Zone

I had a Wix on my 87 Mitsu pickup. I got more start-up noise with the Wix.

I went to a Bosch premium and it is quieter. M1 was quieter also, but too expensive.

I used a wix (napa gold) 1396 filter (which is slightly oversized) on my camry, and had some valvetrain noise at startup. When I switched to the current 1394 (which is the proper size), the valvetrain noise stopped.

The only filter I've ever had a ADBV problem with was a Motorcraft. I still think they are good filters, I just happend to get one of the xxx percentage that will prematurely fail.

No problems so far with my Napa Gold filters.

Yep, had some cold start lifter noise on a Mitsubishi V6 after installing a Wix oil filter, which went away when I switched back to an ACDelco (Champion labs) filter.

I'm glad I am not the only one who has experienced this. Maybe I got the one bad one out of 100, or whatever the percentage is, but I'm still ready to go to something else.

I stopped by the local Wally World to grab a ST and they were out of the PN I needed. I might grab a AC-Delco while I'm out tomorrow and give that a shot.

Thanks again for the replies.

I am about the change the Wix 51515 (oversized, FL1 equivalent) filter because of valve train noise. Saab 900S, 2.3 liter 4 cylinder. Will try the Ford FL400S from Wally World at $2.77!!!!

The Wix filter makes my car sound like a diesel! I just wish there was some way I could change the filter without losing my GC and Lube Control!!

You can! Just drain the filter overnight and reinsall drained oil back in the engine. Bring it inside this time of year so the temp is at least room temp. Unless you have lots of miles on the filter this should work just fine.

I also have noticed this; more clatter with Napa Gold 1394. All the champion made filters are even worse, like real loud on my car. The Purolator premium plus for me is the quietest filter I've tried, and oil stays in the filter overnight.

I guess this would be the PERFECT opportunity to use one of those gizmos that sucks the oil out thru the dipstick! Then I could change the filter w/o losing much oil at all, then replace the oil!

Drats!

Just experienced the same problems with Motorcraft. Some cold days my truck would clatter for at least 2-5 minutes. A member here recomended Napa Gold, and the truck has been quiet ever since!

Sure, on most cars, you can change the oil filter without changing all the oil--just don't remove the oil pan drain bolt. The FL400S should work well, it has a silicone ADBV.

Can you guys above who have experienced valve train and other engine clatter on start up take a look at the problem filters that you removed and report back the make, model number and the color of the ADBV material in these filters? It would be good to determine if there are design problems with certain filter makes/models or with the ADBV material itself.

In general, I think previous forum reports indicate that the silicone ADBV material is much better at reducing startup, but let's see if we have any bad silicone ADBV results from the people above. Supposedly, all NAPA Gold filters have silicone ADBVs, but I suspect there is a changeover date from nitrile to silicone, even for NAPA Gold filters.

I had very good luck in eliminating engine start up clatter when I switched from a Bosch 3401 (black nitrile ADBV of apparently good design) to a Napa Gold 1324 filter (orange silicone ADBV of clearly better design).

As long as the filter is higher than the oil pan it shouldn't be a problem. Most are.

The Napa Gold filter is the only 'good' filter I can find around here. The last two (51344) I've bought have had a nitrile ADBV; prior to that they were silicone. I'm assuming they're cheaping out on these, as they're towmotor filters. I 'might' go back to the 51334 (OEM Honda replacement), to see if I get an orange silicone ADBV next change. That would be the only reason, as I haven't had any valve noise at startup.

Prolonged clatter sounds more like a poorly functioning by-pass valve than a draining filter.

How long does it take for an oil pump to fill up a average spin-on filter...

When I change the oil, I still don't get clatter, and there is NO oil in the filter. Oil pressure light goes off in, like 2-3 seconds.

Thoughts...?

AHC,

Thanks for the detailed filter noise/no noise post. Can you add the filter model numbers to your information? Here is mine:

Moderate startup clatter (about 4-5 secs):
Bosch 3401 (black nitrile ADBV)

No startup clatter:
Napa Gold 1324 (orange silicone ADBV)
AC Delco PF970C (black nitrile ADBV; was using Valvoline 10-30W during break in period)

Engine:
92 Corvette ZR1 (DOHC motor)
3000 miles (on hipo rebuild); 53K on motor
10W-30 Mobil One
Filter is mounted open end down on top part of motor
