Anyone have any experience with how long the different filters' anti drainback valves last? I changed out ASL 5W30 out at 10K miles because the engine was starting to tick slightly at startup. I suspect it was the ADBV leaking slightly. But then 10k is probably past what the filter manufacturers expect. This was a Motorcraft and the issue is important to me as it is horizontally mounted allowing drainage if the valve fails.

I've personally never had an ADBV problems, but would suggest looking for silicone (orange color) ADBVs, rather than nitrile (black), when going extended intervals.

On a vertical mounted filter I don't think it makes any diff. On a side mount etc I say about 6 months which I feel is why the Amsoil filters say 6 months or 12500 miles. At 6 months the seal just starts to seep. IMO. I have two vertical mounted filters and I just go a year on them.

Amsoil says High nitrile with buna N qualities??
Whatever that means?
My question was why they don't use silicone for the ADBV they said theirs was a better material. This was about a year ago.

There are probably quality differences in the materials between brands, but I doubt any Nitrile valve would hold up better then a Silicone one. I would definitely change the filter before 10k miles.

I recently changed the oil on a Lincoln Town Car that had a Motorcraft FL-820S filter on it. The service interval on this vehicle was 5 months and 23 days and the mileage was 4732. The oil was Schaeffer's 10W-30. The oil looked great and the filter was as clean inside as it could be. There were no signs of carbon particles or abnormal metallic dirt. However, the anti-drainback valve tore in half when I removed it from the base plate of the filter. Everything else in the filter was outstanding except the ADBV. It hadn't failed but it was definitely weak to have torn apart when I lifted on it to remove it for inspection.

Just from my own personal experience I won't run a Fram past 3,000 miles (actually won't run them at all) and I won't run other OTC filters past 6,000 miles. The absolute best filters I've seen have been the German/Austrian Mann and Mahle which have looked perfect at 1 year and 15,000 miles. The biggest disappointment to me has been the high priced Amsoil filters. Their internals haven't appeared to be any better than the cheap Wal-Mart filters and I've had numerous people bring them to me for installation in which the ADBV would leak straight out of the box. I half suspect that many of these Amsoil filters are old and this has had a affect on the materials.

This isn't meant to flame. I'm just passing along personal experiences.

Back when I was young and ignorant (no wisecracks!) I ran PH8a filters on my Volvo 240. Every now and then I would notice that when I replaced the filter, it would have essentially no oil in it(!). I'd scratch my head and move on.

Now I know what was going on...the ADBV was failing and allowing oil to drain out that should've been staying in the filter.

I used a strict 2000 mile OCI the entire life of that car (well, from new 'till I sold it..past a quarter million miles). Probably a good thing...

Pretty sad that when ADBV can't reliably go 2000 miles...

From Wix Filters: "SILICONE ANTI-DRAINBACK VALVE: Stays flexible in extreme temperatures, improves oil flow and keeps oil in filter to prevent engine destroying dry starts. Also provides lasting protection to meet new vehicle manufacturers longer recommended oil change schedules. Nitrile valves can harden and become ineffective over time."

That's pretty much what the Ford website says about their FL820S. They don't give any time/mileage limitations on the effectiveness of their silicone valves that I can find.
