I was looking at Google maps of Adak, AK. I believe this was the former Naval Air Station. It looks like Lego pieces from above, then you go to street view and it’s all abandoned with a few people living in them. I was wondering what the white Shute looking things on the windows are? All the homes have them.

Why are you looking at Adak, AL?
Internet searches lead to weird rabbit holes. The last time (ok, well, the last time for this example! 😂) I chased something like this, at the time I searched, some place in Russia was -72*F actual, not wind chill!! I bet THAT place is harsh on vehicles… the place where they change the oil while the vehicle is running!

Edit: BTW, who realized that Adak is the furthest south city in Alaska?

The Cold War was a very interesting time....I slept through most of it. But, making up for it by reading lots of books. Deep dive into Korean War now....wow, just wow.

For some reason makes me think of the Fortitude series

People romanticize AK but there's a reason no one (relatively) lives there. It's harsh, bleak and depressing -- obviously that's just my opinion. If you live there and love it you're in luck because you want what most people don't, which is a truly good position in which to be.

Looking at the Google Earth map of Adak, Alaska, shows the former Naval Station (NAVSTA Adak) but also something very interesting. There were obviously some nuclear weapons storage facilities on that island which would have been very heavily guarded. These images look similiar to missile silos but are obviously simply storage bunkers. While the media states that NAVSTA Adak was there for monitoring Soviet submarine activity, the tell-tale signs show that much more was taking place than what is spoken of.
