Adak, AK

I was looking at Google maps of Adak, AK. I believe this was the former Naval Air Station. It looks like Lego pieces from above, then you go to street view and it’s all abandoned with a few people living in them. I was wondering what the white Shute looking things on the windows are? All the homes have them.

A supplemental note. The USN does not have a port /station in Alaska..kind of amazing and not in a good way.

I believe this was a large Navy base during the Cold War...not sure what the window fixtures are.

If you see those it is not a good sign. They are for high winds. They cover the part of the window that cranks open.

Internet searches lead to weird rabbit holes. The last time (ok, well, the last time for this example! ) I chased something like this, at the time I searched, some place in Russia was -72*F actual, not wind chill!! I bet THAT place is harsh on vehicles… the place where they change the oil while the vehicle is running!

Edit: BTW, who realized that Adak is the furthest south city in Alaska?
