This, exactly. There is absolutely no reason for filter failure (and tears are failures) when a filter is used in an expected application with ordinary viscosities. Oil gets thick when cold? We know that. If a filter is designed for only tropical countries, sell them there only. Then again, the tropical countries might use monogrades or 20w-50, so we shouldn't dump shoddy filters with weak media on them, either.
