Was contemplating running Mobil 1 0w-40 in my Accord. It is a 2004 V6 6-speed manual. I race it at 10+ autocross events per year. Its going to see a couple track days. General street abuse. Not driven much during winter, in fact it hasnt been started in a month or so

The engine makes 265whp now, still naturally aspirated. Calculates to around 312bhp at the crankshaft. This is obviously much higher than stock, power density. Thinking of running Mobil 1 0w-40 for extra wear protection. It has no catalytic converters, so the excess ZDDP isnt an issue for the old pre-cats. Given the excellent synthetic base of 0w-40, think its worth it?

I wouldn't. If you do proceed then you'll be coming back asking about using 20w50.

I think the car specs 5w20. So that or a 30 weight that passes Ford's double time heat test. Which would be the Mobil 1 oils or a Motorcraft variant.

Only if your oil temperatures are higher than normal, if so yes. 5w30 synthetics will have plenty or protection at normal temps. You will also lose marginal amounts of HP with a higher viscosity. If your oil temperatures are above 250F go for it.

If you were in Aus,Shell recommends this:

Helix HX7 10W-40
Helix HX7 K 15W-50

Being in Ohio, you`ll be fine with 0W40.

I think no

The higher hths isn't required in your application even in racing conditions. You may actually lose HP.

If you want a "race oil" that is streetable I would try Royal Purple HPS 5w30.

Just my ten cents.

I would try M1 0w40 but definitely get that analyzed. I don't think something that thick is necessary -- even the high-strung S2000 and NSX motors don't require it.

Honda recommends 10W30 for warmer climate and 5W40 for colder. If he track his Accord then M1 0W40 mix with M1 0W20 at ratio 60% 0W40 and 40% 0W20 may be better for his V6 engines.

For a car that doesn't get ran often, cold flow properties should take a back seat.

I think 0w40 is an excellent choice. M1 HM would be a close second.

I don't think they've ever recommended a 40-weight in the US. The S2000 did spec 10w30 but I ran 0w30 in mine (and plenty of owners run 5w30s).

The problem with AutoX is that you don't see high oil temp's, in fact much like with drag racing below normal oil temp's is usually the case.
I would agree that running a somewhat higher operational viscosity would be in order but that may not translate into a heavier oil grade. IIRC the minimum oil pressure test spec' for your Honda is 50 psi at 3,000 rpm with your by-pass at 6 bar (87 psi). So running a higher minimum OP of say 65-70 psi at 3,000 rpm you could target as long as you're still below 6 bar at maximum rev's.
Achieving this is entirely a function of oil temp's and to be out of by-pass with M1 0W-40 will likely require oil temp's that are too high. I'd stick with TGMO 0W-20/ M1 0W-40 blend since in maximizing the VI you're also maximizing the HTHSV for a given operational viscosity but don't use anymore M1 as is necessary to stay out of by-pass.

I hope this was clear.

FWIW, HMC recommended 5w30 weight oil for the Si k-series motors for more than a decade; 10w30 for the S2k and M1 5w30 for the turbocharged RDX. The Chevy boys still recommend the latter for the C7. I'd start there.

That's one of the cars I'd really like to have.

0/5w-40 ssholdn't hurt it. I believe some people with the J35 in Pilots / Oddyseys are running 5w-40 for the VCM issues.

Wow thanks for all the posts! I will definitely be using it.

So... if your not concerned about fuel economy... you could pretty much use Mobil 1 0w-40 in just about every car. I mean, great cold start properties, additives, TBN.. this oil really has it all.
