AC PF53

Since I have found this forum, I now look at oil filters every where I go (and oil; this drives my wife crazy).

I noticed that the PF53's at Pep Boys have the spring by-pass valve on the non-threaded end of the filter (like Purolator). The PF53's at Auto Zone have the by-pass on the threaded end (like Wix)???

Why are they different. The "base" plate on both filters look like the standard Champion design with the smaller holes and the one bigger hole.

One of the reasons I'm reluctant to buy AC-Delco filters any more is that you never know what to expect to get. Delphi mfg., Champion, mystery UK mfg., etc.

Who knows what this latest twist is from AC-Delco.

Right now I buy either Purolator or Wix oil filters because I think I know what I am getting!

Try checking a made in India Purolator.

if you have room for longer filter(same diameter) go to Wal-Mart and get a FL400S Motorcraft($2,77ea) it's twice as long as the pf53, same treading and gasket. It has the silcone backflow valve with the bypass valve at the treaded end and is made for Ford by Purolater with what looks to the Purone filter element(upwards of 60folds of paper .7in deep in the one I cut, looked identical to the Purone inside except for the bypass valve) They fit just fine on my metro/swift which calls out for the pf53. The other good looking filter is a WIX/NAPA/CARQUEST 51516/1516/85516 but thet do cost more, $5/$6ea. the Motorcraft is the better buy.

One's I have the came from Delphi (thru GM parts) say Delphi right on the box. The are PF52 and PF47 models. If they don't say Delphi on the box, assume they are not.

Delphi was spun off (now a separate company) from GM about 5 yrs (?) back so that may not be in the oil filter business anymore.

Thanks for the advice. I have been using the Purolator Premium Plus or the Wix recently. Both these have worked good. I was just looking at the PF53 and wondered why the filters have the same part number, but were different filters???

By the way, the car is a 1996 Saturn SL1 and the OEM size filter is all that will fit! I tried a PureONE on both my Saturn and my wife's Hyundai Santa Fe...even with cold start up temps in the 50's, both cars had terrible start up noise for about 7 to 10 seconds. I only kept these filters on for a day or two. Replaced them with the Premium Plus, topped off the oil, and all the ticking is now gone! Also, the ticking wasn't there before the PureONE. I run 5w30 conventional in the Saturn and conventional 10w30 in the Santa Fe (Pennzoil).
