AC Delco Filter Ticking?

Hello, I'm actually having a discussion with a gentleman on another forum and he was saying that his Trailblazer SS has a ticking noise every time he starts it but it soon goes away. It is less noticeable when he first has the oil changed and more prominent right before having it changed. He exclusively has it changed at a local Cadillac dealer with Mobil 1.

This came up because he was saying the ticking noise is "just a GM thing". I then asked him what kind of oil filter he was using because if he was using a cheap filter with no anti drain back valve that could be a root to his issue. Now, I am assuming the dealer is just using their standard AC Delco filter but he doesn't know.

The AC Delco filters do have the valve but do you think over time it could wear out and possibly cause some drain back over night and be causing the ticking upon startup?

I hope this isn't too broad.. and possibly somebody also has experience with this situation.

Thanks!

I would agree that the noise is a GM thing, but a different filter is certainly worth the try.

Lots of speculation otherwise.

NO issues with non ecore champs and qsgb.
You do know the roller tappets are designed to quickly bleed down to proved a better cam profile to the valve stem at low rpm.

Makes noise.

The dealer may be using the ecore version of the AC. The combo ADBV on the ecore does not work very well in my experience.

I'd bet a Tough Guard would make it stop.

See, this is what I was thinking too, guys. I mean the guy is paying friggin' 80 bucks an oil change and probably getting a $0.50 oil filter thrown on.

Not sure of if that vehicle has a remote located filter that is not on the block, but my S 10 does. I have indeed noticed with that setup that different filters do create a start up tick that goes away shortly after the engine is running. Ive typically run in recent years my old stash of ultra guard gold Delco filters and Fram ultra filters. So I haven't had a start up tick even after sitting for weeks in many years. But I recall that one I did notice that it was both Fram orange can and Walmart super tech filters that caused it.

If it sounds like a diesel on start up, change that filter as soon as possible. Not that long ago I bought a Mobil 1 oil filter to go on my GM 3.1, and after it sit for 12 hours or so, it sounded like a diesel on start up which is not normal. Took the Mobil 1 filter off, and screwed on a Wix, and it was back to normal. Just a bad filter from the start is all I can figure.

He said he's willing to try something different but he only goes to the dealer and has them do everything so he's going to try the high end AC Delco filter, if they have them. I suggested bringing his own filter. Something like a WIX, or Ultra(because they are easily accessible).

I was trying to recommend something outside the AC/Delco and FRAM family like a Wix.

I'm also thinking you have valvetrain noise or possibly piston slap that is a GM thing.

A total switch like Castrol Edge Gold/Wix might quiet everything down.

You can't keep taking it back to the Cadillac dealer for the same AC/Delco and M1 treatment and expect something to change.

Not bashing Mobil 1 here, as I know it's good oil, but... M1 has always been known for being "louder" than many other oils. It's not as good at muffling engine noise as other oils. In my own experience, Pennzoil seems to be one of the quietest oils.

Nonetheless, here, try one of these:

Or, if there's room for a longer one, this filter is basically the same but is about 1.38 inches longer:

I had some startup noise when I was using a larger than recommended filter with my 4.8L GM. Using a UHP48r and Castrol Edge have done me well (not gold bottle edge, black bottle). The UHP48R is the same as a Mobil 1 filter. The ACDelco Ecore doesn't have a bypass/antidrainback combo, it has a regular button style anti-drainback. This doesn't mean though that the rubber flaps aren't bad
