Here are some picks I snapped of the AC Delco PF1218
This is an Ecore filter, seemed to hold up well.
I bought this truck a year ago the p/o neglected it and the engine is quite dirty inside. This oil change was with Mobil1 High Mileage 10w40, it was about a 2500 mile run, I added 1 quart of atf for the last 400 miles for some extra flushing.

Why did you add ATF? It does absolutely nothing for cleaning an internal combustion engine. You're lucky you didn't cause any damage after running it 400 miles.

I recommend trying AutoRx or MMO. I would defintely keep using the M1 10W40HM. It's a very stout oil.

I ran 1 run of ARX over the summer, filter looked similarly dirty after 1000 miles. It's funny how everyone says atf won't clean anything, but the lifter tick its had ever since I bought it is gone now. It must have cleaned the lifters at the least, my friend also had similar results on curing lifter noise with a short run with 1 qt atf in an old GM 2.5 4 cyl.
I'm running the same oil this change but with a Pure1 filter, I may try some MMO for the last 500 miles on this change, just to see what happens.
BTW, I don't see how people run MMO like its no big deal, but say 1 qt atf will ruin an engine.
ATF is thicker and likely has better lubricating qualities than MMO. Just my observations.

MMO is designed to go into the engine, ATF is not.

The ecore filter seemed to hold up well, captured all that crud no problem. That is probably the 4TH or 5TH Ecore I have dissected, and they have all looked good. This poor engine has alot of this crud in it, previous owner did a lot of short trips and didn't keep the oil changed. I'll have to cut open the PURE1 that is on it now, after my next oil change I'll post pics.

if you have a walmart near you get the supertechs that are a dollar and some change cheaper than the acdelco and work just as well.

It looks like what he is using is doing some cleaning. Probably just the oil. I had similar results (though not as dramatic) with M1 5w20, and currently with 5w40.

I know some of the oil "experts" on this site say ATF does nothing in an engine but I have seen ATF produce results in cleaning a motor.

Anyone that says MMO is better suited for lubricating an engine than ATF is just wrong.

That ATF cleans like crazy is well known. What is not clear is how well the ATF formula mixes with motor oil formula. MMO is guaranteed to mix properly.

ATF has friction modifiers that helps the transmission lock and slip control. So its not ideal for the engine. ATF does have detergents but very little compared to motor oil.

I really can't think of anything in ATF other than its light weight that might clean an engine better than motor oil.

ATF has lubricating properties ... it's used in a lot of manual transmissions these days (ie, Corvettes).

This is not meant to start an argument or anything on what is a better cleaner, but rather an observation. If ATF is just as good a cleaner as MMO and ARX, how does MMO and ARX solve transmission issues (dirty valve body, etc.) just by cleaning them?
