Been a growing trend lately for the criminals to employ absolutely dog acts in the commission of crimes.

Last week had a a number of home invasions in Sydney, 3-4 people, attacking families with machettes, tying up a guy and belting his legs with an iron bar to fess up to where the goods are....only to leave with a wallet or two and a mobile phone.

Had me wondering how people could do that to others, for a resultant chinese take-out meal.

Drove past this place yesterday...then woke up to morning news

http://www.westernadvocate.com.au/news/l...on/2562028.aspx

Owner closing up answers a knock at the door, is beaten to unconsciousness, robbed, tied up with cable ties, then left for dead as they torch the place

Sounds like people and the situation has been going down the tubes in AUS for a while now...

Drugs, most likely meth. I enjoy watching the MSNBC Lockup series which goes inside prisons. When inmates are telling their stories about their crimes the ex meth addicts usually are the ones who committed the most brutal crimes.

These things happen all the time, I'm not sure why everyone is surprised. You only hear more about it in the age of the internet...

This is what happens when a society waters and fertilizes the weeds while stepping on the flowers.

This is nothing new. Look at old history (150+ years ago). There has always been people or groups of people who torture others to get what they want. Look at what the Aztecs did to their own people when they ran into hard times. They rounded up the poor people, blamed them for what happened, and cut out their hearts. American history is wrought with this behavior: Salem Witch Hunt and Brothers killing brothers in the uncivil war come to mind. There are other religious ones that I will leave out because of BITOG rules.

The odd thing is that they call this stuff inhuman. Humans are the only animals that torture their victim (prey), No other animal has that type of behavior. It therefor should be noted that this behavior is not inhuman, but human.

Probably 700+ years ago and 320 or so years ago.

I won't challenge the rest......But I was pretty much thinking the very worst stuff of man happened in the last 100 years without the plus. Think Russia and Germany and China and Japan and the continent of Africa. Pretty much none of these involve the "R" word.

Just keeping it factual and truthful.

PS I'm not clicking on the link after reading your description.

Yep.

Very sad. Ill never understand this behavior. Maybe bad parenting? or bad genes? Either way very awful. Glad I answer my door at night with a rifle in my hand

Not true at all. Orcas play with and torture seals. Male Chimps will go on killing and maiming sprees. House cats torture and kill for sport, the list of "evil" animal acts is actually quite long.

Man, I'm not sure I agree with your definition of truth on this one. It seems that society in general is a lot less violent than any time in recorded history. They just didn't have the internet back in the days of the Punic Wars and the Crusades...

This is an awesome article on this very subject: http://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/136957/timothy-snyder/war-no-more

This is just a preview, but the full text is worth the read. I get this delivered, so I have the hard copy. One of the few print rags worth reading, IMHO. Good plane ride reading.

p.s. my oldest cat is the most sadistic creature I've ever seen. She tortures other beings at every opportunity, so I'm not sure this is limited to mankind.

Not defending the crusades and surely life was shorter and much more brutal before the 20th century, but nothing matches the scale of Russia (Stalin mostly), Hitler and Mao. Let's hope that's done and over and if so, you are correct - within current history, we are relatively peaceful and indeed minor skirmishes are way overblown.

Starting to smell fishy here.

The initial report was that he was knocked unconscious, robbed, cable tied up, and left to burn. Hero citizen stopped, heard his cries, and dragged him out of the building before it burned down.

Last night, it was he was knocked unconscious (rubs forehead, where there were no contusions), cable tied, left outside the building in a pile of mulch/compost to watch his store burn, and a couple in a car and a truck driver stopped, heard his calls, moved his car away from the flames, cut his cable ties, and drove off into the night as unknown heros.
