About Mobil 1's Noise.

KieferS - good pts, though I haven't seen the "not near impressive" used oil analysis your spking of (I'm not saying they don't exist) - but yes, I would stear clear of an oil that increased my engine noise or had poor used oil analysis (obviously).

Even if I was anti- some lines of Mobil 1, I wouldn't lump the whole batch together - Mobil 1 0w40 has few naysayers on BITOG that I've seen. And let me clarify that I presently think Mobil 1 is top shelf across their product lines - though they have priced themselves out of my wallet with their EP line.

Here's one thread Eric -

More valve chatter with PP?

Leshan, the thing w/ the armchair tribologist is - they are (often) armchair tribologist - that plus there is some serious M1 animosity by some users on BITOG (M1 is the big guy, M1 marketing schemes, pricing, etc is rather offensive to many - M1's EP pricing is offensive to me). M1 is loaded with all the sweet anti-scuffing, anti-everything additives - I would have a REAL HARD PROBLEM BELIEVING that an oil ADDITIVE (a very minor % chemical in the oil) could compromise the base stock's lubrication and cause engine noise.

Merkava - there is so much subjective anecdotal evidence going one way and the other that I can pass on the PP noise post.

Note, it seems to be accepted on BITOG that there is the placebo/subjective "my engine runs smoother/quiter" when I changed the oil. Indeed, it's been said on BITOG that the engine may indeed be running a bit smoother with new oil - so now enter the PP situation - how many of these post (and I haven't seen that many) were written a few days after they chged to PP. Some probably do have truly smoother engines with PP, but some of these post may have been the "new oil" affect.

But I did notice that my engine noise was louder when I change my oil from Castrol GTX 5w30 to Mobil 1 5w30. Mobil 1 5w30 was fresh oil then.

In some engine designs M1 is noticeably noisier. In some engine designs, M1 shows higher iron wear.

I suspect it has nothing to do with the base oils, and everything to do with the additive package.

1995 Impala SS with 107,000 miles, M1, 7,000 mile OCI. The timing chain & sprocket wear were very unimpressive. I have read this a common experience with the LT1. Even without their 'improved' pricing, it made it's way off my shopping list.

Someone needs to try my impact noise experiment, using oils of identical viscosity, but with different traction coefficients. hypothesis: high traction oil is quieter

I am guessing Oil Film does not happen until engine parts are hydroplaned (for the lack of better word). Perhaps its the duration before the film is formed that this noise occurs?

as i have stated before in my 3.4 yota v6 mobil 1 syn does make my motor noise louder. mobil syn is great oil! there isnt anyone here that can say that it isnt. now what i would like to know is there a corrolation between the high iron wear and the motor chatter.. since i put durablend in my motor (10w30) it is quiter and the reving is quiter. the more i drive it the more i see that the throttle response is slightly lower using the durablend compared to the Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30 i used to use.. but its not enough to really want me to back to mobil so fast.. i kind of like having a slightly quiter motor.

you just switched from a full synthetic to a blend, and you felt the throttle response was a little slower. Your observation may be true but the expirament is flawed since the durablend is well..a blend. Try redline, or amsoil or synpower..it'll be just as quiet and the throttle response will be back.

durablend isnt much of a blend. i think its around 10% blend i think.. this is an experimental oil change here. ran m1 syn 5w30 for 40k miles. i know its not going to perform just like the full synthetic oils. thats a given but for 5k mile intervals. the protection #'s are just as good. its when you go past that point is when the syns shine a little brighter, imo

this is tricky because Amsoil has significantly higher viscosity than M1 across their product line.

Please prove this. (Pssst....it's not true)

As for engine noise - while it is true in the automotive world, that no noise is a good noise, perceived noise is often just that. Noises at different frequencies are more perceptible to some people, but that doesn’t mean a noise is “louder”. I have heard comments all over the map on Amsoil. I suppose it depends on how people hold their head! But most people say their cars are quieter right after an oil change......

In my cars noise doesn't seem to follow oil viscosity, it follows oil filter brand.

pablo, that too can be argumented. some oil filters restrict flow hence the less oil getting sprayed so to speak on certian areas of the motor.. good point

Ok Pablo - we'll call it a tie - I just chk the visc at 100deg on three M1 vs Amsoil products (0w20, 10w30 and 5w30 - full synt lines) - the M1 was thinner in the 0w20 and 10w30 but thicker in the 5w30. I don't want to keep chking, so I'll take your word that there's not a significant trend.

The filter theory is interesting. Many folks using Mobil 1 are often using the Mobil 1 filter which is known for being restrictive.

Note that many people claim noise at start up that then quiets - this sort of replicates the restrictive filter issue (if it is an issue) since oil has not yet pumped thru the engine.
