I'm heading down to my parents house this week. I will be buying their oil and filter for their next OCI. They own a 02 PT Cruiser. This will be their last OCI for this car. It will be one year long. They drive less then 7K a year. They will be buying a new car next year.

I was planning to buy Edge 5w30 and a Fram Extended Guard filter at Walmart. I saw Pep Boys has Mobil 1 Extended Performance and filter for $29.99 on sale this month. So it's a toss up. Here are the specs.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30

Viscosity
cSt @ 40º C 61
cSt @ 100º C 11.0
HTHS Viscosity 3.1
Pour Point, ºC -48
Flash Point, ºC 230
TBN ?

Castrol Edge 5w30

Viscosity
cSt @ 40º C 54.7
cSt @ 100º C 9.8
HTHS Viscosity ?
Pour Point, ºC -35
Flash Point, ºC ?
TBN ?

I thought Edge would be a good choice in this application. I'm looking for a oil to last a year long, have a low viscosity, to try to help at start up and with mileage. The PT is a pig when it comes to MPG!

Thanks

I've never used Edge, but I am a long time user of Mobil 1 oils and have been using Mobil 1 Extended Performance since they came out with it. EP is an outstanding oil for many engines and will go 10-12K with no problems.

What oil change deal? Edge has a coupon on the castrol site for $20 off of 5 quarts so that makes 5 quarts $6.50

Edge is on sale on AAP also though. Buy it from there on that oil change special and on top of that, send off for the rebate and you get the Edge super cheap!

Buy whatever is cheaper. Even a good dino can manage 7k miles/1 year OCI. Then, if you're going to sell the car on your own, just before you put it up for sale, change the oil again. Psychologically, buyers feel better when they see fresh oil on the dipstick.

The coupon I saw wasn't good for the bottles themselves. It was just a rebate if you have the oil changed at a lube joint and pay the labor.

Castrol EDGE 5w30 is a great choice.

This is the Xtendedguard, not the extraguard. The EG is garbage, but the XG is in fact a very well made filter.
