CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) - A Marine security officer who was practicing drawing his handgun and accidentally shot his 9-month-old daughter to death has been sentenced to a year in jail.

Twenty-six-year-old Colton Jack Luman pleaded guilty in June to involuntary manslaughter in Chesapeake Circuit Court and was sentenced Monday.

The Virginian-Pilot reports court records show the infant was in a high chair at Luman's home on Naval Support Activity Norfolk, Northwest Annex, when the shooting occurred in February.

What a tragedy, and what a sad event for the father. Even if his jail time is the last he hears from anyone else about this, he will be paying for it for the rest of his life.

I am a 2A proponent. But when you see highly trained people violate the most basic rules (yes multiple rules)..it gives you pause to wonder about who's legally packing heat. Especially like States like Pa, where you have to know exactly zero about a weapon.

What a terrible story. Obviously a divorce will result.

But lets not get hung up on shooting enthusiasts..statistically it will be the non-enthusiasts that cause most of the mayham.

He should be practicing to maintain the skills, but how stupid can you be doing this with a loaded weapon!!?? That's what gets me the most.

Yeah, I missed out the "loaded" part, figured that much would be implied for anyone doing anything like that.

I wonder if he made the old "Removed the magazine but forgot about the chamber" trick.
This is a really good reason to practice with snap caps. If nothing else it makes you cycle the action to unload the forgotten live round and replace it with a dummy.

Idiot! Check the [censored] chamber and remove the magazine everytime you handle a weapon, and jesus, dont do it infront of your infant. Moron, this sort of thing makes other gun owners look bad, and he took his childs life away.

+1 on the snap caps, I have bright red and orange snap caps in the chamber everytime I practice dry firing out of a holster, a quick look and I can verify that the chamber is safe.

Makes me wonder what training he had in the first place. Our Tazer training was only one day.. I think normal training is a week for LEO's. If I had a choice I'd never carry one. As it is I don't carry a cartidge on thy self. Got to feel sorry for the guy not only did he loose a kid has to go to jail also.. guess he'll have plenty of time to recover.

I don't understand how this can happen. A safety security officer, having guns around newborns, drawing the weapon right towards her...obviously a very careless person and poor parent.

I have a newborn and I am constantly on the look out to preserve her and my other kids from danger, which can be anything as they are relatively helpless. They depend on you as a parent for that protection. Sorry to say he will be tormented for this life-long. So sad.

This is such a basic breach of safety and common sense protocols, this guy should go to jail for the rest of his life.

If this guy is this stupid and careless around his family, how risky and dangerous is he going to be around the general public?

Lock him up and throw away the key - sorry, he screwed his chance at being a part of society.

There's always this gem:

I'm anal retentive in general, but when handling a firearm, I up the ante even more. Accidents will and do occur, but I'm always cognizant of the state of my firearms; whether they're loaded, unloaded, chambered, or un chambered.

Even if I know a gun is un chambered, I still keep my finger resting on the side of the trigger guard. It only goes in if I intend to fire the weapon! That is just basic gun handling .101
