A Pleasant Surprise

I picked up some parts from my John Deere dealership today that I ordered last Thursday. When I arrived home with them I was pleasantly surprised when I read the labeling on each package.

1 solenoid for a 210-made in the USA.
1 key switch for a 210-made in the USA.
1 circuit breaker for a 210-made in the USA.
1 wiring harness for a 210-made in the USA.

I'm restoring my 1975 210 and I'm replacing the 36 year old electrics and wiring. All of the parts are exactly like the originals-no plastics substituted for metal, etc. The only part that my dealer didn't have on hand was the wiring harness, and that arrived today (I called and ordered it late Thursday).

I also bought the following parts for my 757.

1 air filter-made in the USA.
1 rubber deck lift foot pad-made in the USA.

I hear about a lot of companies moving off shore, and I hear a lot of complaints about lesser quality foreign parts. Kudo's to John Deere for not only manufacturing every John Deere product I own in the USA, but also manufacturing the parts, some as much as 36 years later, in the USA.

Pop Rivet, I've bought many overseas made Deere parts, likely from the same dealer you bought yours from. I hate to say it, but the day is coming...

The parts are probably new old stock which were originally made in the USA.

the starter for my Deere inline-6 turbo diesel genset was remanufactured in japan, purchased from the Deere dealer. Haven't needed any other parts for it yet, and it's at 5500 hours and is used everyday.

I guess it depends on what exactly you buy. I purchased a JD 2040 (40hp farm tractor) around 1980. I was a little dismayed when I got it delivered and found that the engine was labeled "Made in France" and the chassis was labeled "Made in Belgium." As it turned out, it was one of better JD products I have owned....worked it hard and had no problems with it at all.

It seems silly, but my personal aircraft, an old Cessna 177RG is chock a block full of "all American" parts. Now that it's 40 years old, I'm replacing some of them. The replacements do not come from America and don't last.

What's interesting is the actual quality of the solenoids used (there are about 30 of them). The American originals are robust, tolerant of high heat, water proof and lasted 40 years. The replacements are Chinese, contain plastic (instead of phenolic) and fail within a year. There is so much wrong with the Chinese parts it's disgusting.

I might have thought the same thing if I didn't know that John Deere has manufacturing dates printed right on most of their OEM parts labels.

All of the parts listed were manufactured between 01-31-2010 and 4-13-2011, so none were NOS.

John Deere has plants all over the world and they still haven't closed any here. In fact they opened new ones in the last 10 years. Their compact utility tractors are now made in the US, instead of Japan.

Every has their favorite brand, but no one can argue that JD has great parts availability. You can even still get parts for engines that are close to 100 years old.
