A plea to the board/mods/Vetteman

I really like to talk about current events/politics (surprise there!), especially with the people on this board. Would there be any consideration whatsoever to having a politics/current events forum within the board? Heck, I'll moderate it! We could even have it so you have to register seperatly to view and post in it or something along those lines. I'm not saying some free for all debate with personal attacks and the like, but more along the lines of a civil debate about the ways of the world. Vettemen, if not, then I totally understand.

Drew99GT, I really kind of like the board with out the current events/politics section. I have been on boards where that section spills over into the regular stuff. I like the unpolitical oil discussion, and that gets heated even.

The reason its not allowed imo is that this site is about lubrication and its related topics. If politics got involved on the site, it would cost more to run it..... On other sites I've been on where you can post what you want, I have seen people become enemies who were once friends over political differences. If anyone knows of any politcal blogs please post them.

I agree 100%, even though I've been guilty of discussing politics once or fifteen times here on BITOG.

I wish we could open it up a bit. I mean we discuss marital issues, birds, black holes, cameras and lot lizards - but no politics?!?!

I wish we could and shut the thread down ONLY if name calling breaks out. Maybe keep the ban on religion, but add politics?

A trial period might be a thought. A cash donation to enter the political forum might work.

I knew Pablo'd be in!

I want know name calling, no political bashing etc., just a civilized debate. The instant someone crosses the line then they get edited etc.

I'd vote to open up the Off Topic forum a bit too.

Treat political et al comments the same as any other forum on this board--discussion is acceptable but personal attacks etc are not.

It's not the content, it's the level of civility used in discussion.

As one post mentioned, folks can get riled up over oil too!

I know the desire to discuss these topics with these people. It's a natural urge. It always ends up in a hostile name calling stone throwing exchange with various comparative "measurings" of others level of awareness and conscience.

It's something that we can't handle. Sure you can moderate it ..but it ends up being a case of "judgement calls" ..."is this too far out?" "is that too inflamatory?" .."do I let this go simply because I agree with what he says?" and "do I edit this guy since he's opposed to my take on life?".

Trust me. I love a political debate. I have more rhetorical ammo than a survivalist compound under siege ...but it ends up that people really don't want to exchage ideas and views and perceptions ...they want to feel the way they feel ..and aren't really interested in alternative points of view. This naturally leads to the "reaction formation" (after the rationalization, intelectualization, and outright denial) to just bash the guy that takes them to the mat.

It's like the old saying, if you can't win the chess game ..upset the checker board.

People don't like having their paradigms toppled.

I've thought of that. Heck, I have my own blog site online that I wanted to test out in my own domain, I just don't have any time whatsoever to devote to administering it.

Mostly due to those political and religious rants, I've already irrevocably lost enough respect for too many of these people as it is.
