Well, I've done alot of reading on this sight the past few days, and I've learned a tonne, but still have a ways to go.

I never new that the price of oil analysis was so affordable, I always thought they were extremely expensive.

My plan is to gather a bunch of VOA's from the different oils I've have read about on BITOG, and some other oils I've used in the past. I will also gather VOA's on some additives that I've read about, and used.

Then, analitically look through through all the data and see which oil and/or additive has the components I'm looking for to accomplish the type of protection I need for my driving style/needs.

In order to do this I still need to do some reading on BITOG to figure out what compounds do what. Still alot to learn.

I will also do some UOA's to see how my theories are panning out.


Good plan? Modifications?
 
The kind of protection I'm mainly looking for is for spirited driving and racing on the weekend. Still driven daily in traffic as well.

I'm not really looking for long OCI's, I'm rather looking to keep the like new performance on my motor for as long as possible.

In other words, I want protection under HARD use at extremely high and low temps. Having tonnes of detergents, anti-ox for extended use is not my main goal (I've only been on the board for a couple of days, so I might be talking out of my *** here, correct me if I'm wrong please).

I change my oil and filter every 5000kms (3000miles) as force of habit (I also do other kinds of maintenance at the same time).

What I want is something shear stable, that will hold up under high heat (good base stock, group IV?), and provide AW & EP protection while the engine is hot and while cold. I'd also like to have as many backup AW and EP additives as possible. This is why I'd like moly levels in the 500ppm's, I'm looking for anti-wear properties, not just FM's.

Oil anaylsis (car vs. bike)

I'm really liking the Maxxum Ultra (by Maxima Oils), the only thing that I would add to it is some Boron.

Is there an additive that has Boron (CLS)?

Am I right in saying CLS is created by Boron?
 
There are a lot of VOA's already. You really cant tell if the add mixture is correct just by looking at the VOA.

However, if you want shear stable with a lot of moly go Redline.

94 VW Corrado, VR6, it has 70k miles. Compression check last year was 170psi +,- 2psi.

There is a slight lifter tick, and the timing chain tensioner is cracked (common on 12V VR6, will be replaced soon) causing the chain to slap. I think a slightly thicker oil would help the chain slap.

Oil temps on the highway reach 108-112 centigrade, and average 102-104 in traffic.

I'm not rich, so I won't pay for any new VOA's if the data already exists here. I know VOA's won't tell me everything I need, but every little bit of data/info helps with decision making. I'll try to get more complete OA's if possible and not too much $$$

Redline has been in my sights for a while, but its really expensive, especially for my car (6L's, canister filter, 0W40 or 5W40 weight)
 
It is cheaper than Maxima oils. No?

If you want Boron in the oil go with Mobil 1 EP. IF you want a cheap additive with Boron go with Valvoline VSOT. If you want the best additive go with Molekule's SX-UP oil treatment. CLS is way overpriced. I would not add anything to Redline or Maxima oils.

Remember though, I am just some anonymous dude on the internet, spouting off my opinion.

Maybe, but I value and want everyones opinions. I'll draw my own conclusions of course.

The truth is always buried somewhere in the collective wealth of opinions, its just of matter of sorting through it all.

I thought the CSL was formed inside the engine. Boric acid is the active ingredient isn't it?

I probably wound't add anything to Redline or Maxima. In my area, Redline and Maxima prices are pretty much a wash.

I would like to get my hands on some Sex-Up, and will order some in the future. I would also like to find some VSOT in the mean time. Some GC too.

I've found some oil I bet no-one has used yet. I've heard good things about it, and a VOA is will be up soon. It was a little pricey, but still reasonable. Figured, why not.

The oil and additive choices in my area straight up suck monkey balls.

dohc, I currently am running the Maxum 4 Ultra 0w30 in my Honda CR-V, and am loving how the vehicle responds. I will be getting a VOA done as soon as I receive the kits in the mail, so I'll have an exact composition level for you in the not so distant future.

I also have used Redline products and have had success with them as well. I, by nature, am a tinkerer, which is the only reason that I keep switching, but so far, the Maxima oil looks like a real winner to me, but only the analysis will tell the true tale...
 
Figuring out how oil performs in someone else's vehicle base on a bitog thread is difficult. Trying to make sense of a uoa on this same vehicle has got to be difficult, as well, especially if there is only one or two. Numbers in a uoa can easly be taken out of context. Particle counts are not often done and good a good follow up does not often happen. There is really not much to analyze beyond making your choice. There are patterns or trends, for sure, but one mis-informed comment can offset a dozen positive responses.

If you really want to stir up a hornet's next on the subject of oil, just try to start a thread on Synlube. A lot of the oils discussed on this site have their champions on the site and I'll bet they are all good products, synthetic or conventional. One might be a little better than the other and that's the fun of lurking around bitog. The process is more important than the answer. Either of your choices should be up to the task, given that you do all the other maintenance stuff, too.

I just brought 8L's of XD3 0w40 from walmart, was suprised how cheap it was. Will probably give it a try this coming January.

My next oil change (coming up soon) will be with some Bardahl XTC 5w40. I will have a VOA for you guys on this. I also have some XTD, but I'll save that for the summer.

Can't the lab at least find out what group it is?
If the lab can't, then I'll just call or email the companies. I know I'll probably have a hard time getting any info out of them, but I'll try anyway.

I'm more interested in its Cst @ 100 degrees and the TBN of the UOA, that'll tell me how the base oil is holding up.
 
Oh, I also brought some Rotello SD or SB last night, its a fully synth 0w40. Have any of you guys heard or used the SD/SB?

I saw some Rotello T last night to, but it doesn't appear to be synthetic...at least not here is Canada. Its synth for you guys no?

Good to here, post up that VOA when you get it, we'll see how it compares to the VOA sportrider.com did (link above).
