Just wondering how often some of the rest of you take a look inside the engines you're running. Today I had the intake manifold and valve covers off the Chrysler 440 in my '66 Polara, an engine that I built 3-1/2 years ago and now has 30,000 miles on it. I broke it in on Castrol GTX then switched to Rotella T synthetic. 30k miles isn't a lot and I would have been *sorely* p*ssed off if it hadn't looked flawless, but it did look flawless. Cam lobe wear patterns look perfect, everything is as clean as the day I put it together.

FWIW, I pulled the intake to change the valley pan gasket to one that restricts the carb heat a little more- too much vapor locking on hot days with this winter-blend cr*p gasoline we get from November-April. Its absolutely criminal that a car can run perfectly in 110 degree summer heat stuck in traffic with the AC cranked on summer fuel, but vapor locks and surges on an 85-degree day in March due to winter blend fuel. Thank you, EPA :-/
 
A camera scope of the right size can be very useful if you have or can borrow one, otherwise must do some dissassembly.
 
Cool sled! My dad had a 66 Polara (383). No I have not had a reason to pull something apart like that and I've driven my last two cars for 18 and 15 years before parting company with them. Would be interesting though.
 
Grandma had a 68 (I think) Polara 440.

Didn't they used to put a tinfoil wrapped pack of insulation between the intake and valley pan gasket on those?
I seem to remember that on my buddy's 383
 
I was wondering if you could put on an Edelbrock Air-Gap Intake Manifold on your engine.

There is no provision for the exhaust heat crossover thing in the manifold.

The intake runners are seperated from the hot engine oil, just a thought.
 
I can comment regarding the foil wrap thing Rabbler mentioned. I changed the valley pan gasket on my 383 in my Polara when I coverted from a 2-bbl to 4-bbl setup. There was definitely some form of foil/fiberglass insulation on the old valley pan cover. Of course it was also pretty gunky from 40 years of dirt/oil leak gunk that built up. I guess it was there to block too much heat from getting to the manifold. I know you can get different valley pan gaskets that either allow or block the heat crossover passages.

Blocking the manifold exhaust passage will do nothing about vapor lock.
Vapor lock is fuel boiling in the lines or the carburetor.

For street driving with a carburetor, you want that manifold heat to vaporize the fuel droplets. This helps even out mixture distribution, which is a problem with carbureted V8s. It also is better for burning evenly and fully in the cylinders. The very fast moving fuel droplets have only a microsecond to vaporize, and need all the help they can get.

For racing at full throttle, many block those passages off to get a bit denser net mixture.
 
To answer a few questions:

Yes, these engines (all big-block Mopars) originally come with a pack of foil-wrapped insulation under the intake and above the valley pan, but it is purely for sound deadening- to muffle the noise the lifters make. The exhaust heat crossover is *above* said insulation, and removing the insulation and partially (or totally) blocking the crossover will cool the manifold better than leaving the insulation pack there and just blocking the x-over. The factory manifold *is* an "air gap" style on big Mopars, its not like small Mopars where the hot oil touches the intake underside. The insulation pack blocks airflow under the manifold, though.

As to what causes the v-lock- its boiling in the carb on this engine, and as I've said its only a warm day in winter thing when they switch us over to the high vapor-pressure fuel for "better vaporization" during winter months. Summer is *fine* even though the temps are much much higher under the hood. No amount of heat shielding or insulating the carb from the manifold with phenolic spacers has stopped it yet, and the exhaust crossover pumps a lot of heat into the carb through the mounting studs. The fuel line is completely insulated, and I'm running a rear-mounted pusher electric pump so the line never even gets close to the engine until it hits the carb. Short of installing a closed-loop system with a regulator and return line like my '69 has, the fuel is as cool as possible until it touches the carb.

As for the wisdom of blocking the X-over... I ran the previous engine (the original 383) for about 10 years with the x-over completely blocked. Trust me, there's *no* negative effect on driveability in my climate. Even in freezing weather (which is about as cold as it gets here), the manifold warms quickly by conduction from the heads, especially since I'm running the aluminum Mobil 1 dual plane. Plus the charge air temp is lower so I can add a few more degrees of ignition advance without pinging.

Sorry, I didn't shoot any pics of the cam... didn't really think about it since it looked perfectly good. The rockers, shafts, valves, springs,cam, and pushrods look clean as the day I built it. I'm very pleased with the Rotella so far, but as I said 30k miles really isn't much of a test. The one exception would be under the valve covers near the outside edges- big Mopars really heat that area up because of the upswept "log" exhaust manifolds and the exhaust crossover passage directly inside the head. Most older conventional oils will carboinze or "coke" a little at that area, but it was perfectly clean with no hint of charring with the Rotella. Same as I've seen on other BBMopars with Mobil 1.

Thanks for all the comments, and next time I wind up doing a job like that I'll shoot some photos for sure. What I really wish I had were photos of my wife's old '93 3.5L when I replaced its valve cover gaskets at over 200k miles- SPOTLESS clean. That was on Mobil 1 10W30, SL rated and prior though.
