A different kind of life style

I love the concept. If I were 15 years younger It would be me. At the age of 70 I still have not ruled it out.
Great thread!!!

Translation:

Code enforcement does not want a movable structure and something under certain square footage on their yard. (hence some difficulty/none allowed on the made from container ship/tiny/manufactured structures)

P.S. aren't you in Portland just had a city ordinance that landlords have to process the first qualified tenant and not the most qualified tenant? or it was Seattle?

I'm buying a very small house with large garage for projects. I expect to put up a HF portable garage behind the main garage.

Interesting concept, being able to afford the house you live in without a lifetime of payments to the financial industry. Being debt free and spending your money on stuff you need instead of interest payments would be a big change in the economy. Just imagine the pressure brought to bear by those running the economy to resist such changes.

No kids and just my wife and I, I could see it but I don't get the people that move 3 kids and a huge dog into something smaller than a 5th wheel camper.

What I would want in a tiny house?? A) not a doggone trailer on wheels. B) A real cinder block foundation that is covered with nice small bricks. C) A house with real construction.. aka real floor joists, ply wood for all exterior walls, very well insulated and good windows. D) Anywhere from 700-1000 sq feet.

IF and its a big if that could actually be built somewhere then I would gladly sign on for that. A real quality constructed small house using real quality materials would be a truly great deal for me. Not some hooptyfied trailer in wheels with trailer park construction and parts. My lady and I live in a 1000 sq foot apartment in a very good area of town and we are quite happy here. I would want the same or better in a small/tiny house. Here's info to know.... average size house in the 1950s was 1100 sq feet. By mid 2000s it was up over 2400 sq feet. My lady's grandmother had a family of 6 in a 1100 sq foot house. We're people less happy back then?? I doubt it. Bigger isn't always better. I would like to see a developer start a good quality development of small/tiny houses. I bet it would actually work out if it could or would be allowed.

My wife and I live in a 1040 sq foot "cottage". 2 BR, 2 Bath, 2 Car Garage.

Works fine for us. Ten year old house well insulated.

Our mortgage is less than any apartment, and it is cheap to upkeep.

We have plenty of room inside the house and we live on a double lot.

My wife and I plan to retire into a tiny house. The difficulty of raising several children in a tiny house are too insurmountable for us right now.

The Living Big in a Tiny House channel on youtube is pretty interesting even if he comes off as a little spacey at times. The houses he highlights are usually quite impressive.

In our area 1000 sqft footprint was the minimum but that could include a porch. Our house isn't much bigger and it seems to be fine for the 4 of us so far. I guess when the boys turn into 6'+ lunkers the house may seem a bit tighter then... The kids spend alot of time outside since we have lots of land and I look forward to when they get big enough not to be coyote bait, and can really roam around the countryside.

We had planned to put on a timberframe addition by now but we also like mortgage free living so it may not happen until the kids leave and we have cash and time to do lots of it ourselves. I think travel is a better investment at the moment.

That sounds like a really nice place! What part of Tx do you all live in?

The wife, my two kids and I live in a 700 square foot house (that's what it was advertised as). Basement is 20x28' (outside house dimensions), minus furnace, water tank, oil tank. Does this count as tiny house living? Sure feels like it... We don't have a dining room nor dining room table; heck my bedroom doesn't even have a door on it.

On the flip side I do have 1.5 acres, low crime area, near a lake, quiet area, etc.

Round Rock, TX, which is north to Austin TX. Beautiful part of the world.

Didn't Oakwood make these things for years?

You're living the good life, Supton. My goal upon high school graduation was to never join the rat race with unnecessary extravagances. Two people occupying a 4,000 sq. ft. home just seems wasteful to me. Our first home in the Upper Peninsula was about the size of yours and the current one we raised three kids in is only slightly bigger. We are very content with life and have few wants. Friends, family, and experiences are what matter. Just my way of thinking. I wouldn't change much at all if given the chance. Yea, small homes make for a tight knit family and the kids grow up with a good perspective on life.

I know of someone who raised six children in a <900 sq. ft. house. (I've been in the house, in fact, and it is tiny.)
