A/C runs with heat?

Moving tomorrow into a new apartment. While I was walking through it after signing the lease today I noticed our A/C was running with the heat on. Walked over and shut the thermostat off and the condenser shut off too...

Can you have a regular gas furnace AND a heat pump?

Incorrect wiring somewhere? I have a Nest in my current apartment and it's been a fantastic thermostat and will be going with me to the new place. Maybe the Nest will know better than to run the a/c?

If you are going to remove the existing thermostat from your current apartment and take it with you, be sure to install a working thermostat in the existing apartment before you leave unless you want to get into all kind of trouble when the pipes freeze and break.

BTW, there are some existing heat pump systems that also have a gas furnace.

It could be a hybrid system where the heat pump is the primary source of heat, and the gas furnace is used as a backup.

Yea I saved the original, it's going back on...I would never leave and not put a thermostat on in January lol

Weird. My old apartment had a natural gas furnace in winter & air conditioner in summer. But it was impossible to run both at the same time, because there was a switch: "Heat" or "Cool".

Heat pumps are popular and work well here in Phoenix where temps rarely get below 30, but why would you have one in Ohio? I suppose the gas furnace could be a backup to the heat pump when it got too cold, but I would think that would be most of the time in the winter months, making the heat pump pretty much useless.

He's saying when it's slid to heat both A/C and heat come on

Yes. It's not uncommon in the Midwest. A few years ago there were a number of companies pushing heat pumps/furnace systems in the Midwest. Once the 96-98% efficient furnaces came down in price it no longer made much sense, but with some of the older 70 and 80% efficient systems, in the right circumstances, it can save quite a bit over just using the furnace alone.

You do realize that in places such as Ohio, as well as other areas of the Midwest, the winter daytime temperatures are often in the upper 20's and low 30's, making a heat pump quite useful. If it's someone who turns the thermostat down at night, it's very possible to run the heat pump the majority of the time, given that they still work in the 25-30 degree outdoor temperature range. It is more efficient to move heat than to generate heat.

My family had a condo that had heat pumps in columbus Ohio in the 1980's and 90's.

It was quite common back then.

All apartments down here in Texas have electric heat down here, most houses have gas however.

BAck when natural gas was very expensive I'm sure a heat pump would save a ton of money.

Right now it only really makes sense with a propane/electric backup etc.

Yes you can have a heat pump with gas as the backup/emergency heat. But was the gas furnace running heat, or is that just the air handler unit running? Either way, you weren't running a/c while the thermostat was set to heat and the wires aren't crossed. Don't cross any trying to fix what you perceive to be broken.

The AC was on to get rid of moisture - dry paint, maybe wet carpets before move in. Same as your car, HVAC may not be running properly if the AC is blowing warm air.

If the air coming out of the outside unit is cold (colder than outside), it's a heat pump in heating mode.

Its normal for a heat pump to run during the winter and if working correctly, should rarely require auxiliary heat. However, typically the thermostat is set to turn on the auxiliary heat if the thermostat falls 2*F below the set point. In other words, set-back thermostats (or simply adjusting the tstat manually) by 2* or more will usually turn on the auxiliary heat (nat gas, oil, whatever).
