I pulled this recently to clean the contacts and see if I could get the drvr & psngr rear windows to raise back up. Partially successful. However, close inspection revealed some very badly pitted contacts. It is nearly 15 yrs old and the OEM part. I took photos but they were badly out-of-focus despite using the 'macro' mode.

I found the issue with the RL window to be the wiring at the back of the connector. I could jiggle the harness while holding down the switch and it would suddenly start closing.

A quick 'net search revealed this as a possible solution. Haven't heard of Dorman before.

This also reminded me the window lift mechanism is certainly long overdue for a good clean and new lube after so many years...and lifts.

I'm thinking white lithium grease here, any other suggestions?

Dorman is a very popular manufacturer of parts that frequently fail, and are usually only available through a dealer. I'd use their products with confidence.

Dorman part quality varies allot (their AT trans pans with drains are excellent while other parts I have used failed quickly)

I did a search, the Dorman part is $75 while you can find a Genuine Volvo part (Genuine Volvo Driver Side Window Switch 8638452) from Dealers on ebay for $125

Example (no pers exp)http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Volvo-Driver-Side-Window-Switch-8638452-/321162600936?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ac6c861e8&vxp=mtr

I would spend the extra $50 for a better part

?????

You would 'use their products with confidence' even though they 'frequently fail'?

TILT...

Thanks. A 40% discount is nice compared to OEM. However if it won't go the distance...then again this is now a 15 year old vehicle...

I've already ruled out used because they're probably in the same shape as mine.

I'll do some searching...

I used one in my car. I did it right before I sold it, so I can't speak to how it held up long-term, but it actually appeared better built than the OEM part. I'd go with the new Dorman switch. I tried a couple of times to "fix" the old one, and it was a giant waste of time.

Yea...I agree. Cleaning dirty contacts is one thing but a few of these were deeply pitted, possibly because they're used so much. With the switch contact sparking I witnessed, I wonder if they used snubbers to control the motor's back EMF? Then again, deeply pitted contacts tend to spark more than new ones.

Thanks for the reply!

I really never know what I am goint to get when I use Dorman. For example, some Fords use a "Cam sync plug" and it is a common problem. The Dorman "problem solver" part fails even sooner.

I would just buy a Volvo OEM part. Anything electrical that goes 15 years is a really well made part.
