Just took these pics of my 98 Buick less res book. Wondering if anything here is obsolete today? In particular, the 3 month 3000 miles oil change. I'm doing about 3000 miles in 6 months. Stop n go for sure. I'm planning on using napa synthetic blend 5w30 for upcoming winter ,change it myself next week . If Im prob gonna average 650-700 miles month. And December temps about 42 F, Jan Feb 22 degrees F. Does the 3 month still apply to me ? Or go the 6 months and 3000 miles? My concern is fuel contamination and sheering with 5w30. In stop go traffic. I know use 10w30 synthetic .don't want to. Got itch for napas dino blend 5w30

Oil has come a long way since ‘98. If it was me, I would stick with 5W30 in a reasonably priced synthetic and change it in the spring, or every 5-6000 miles if you drive it enough. Can’t see a 3800 with a short timing chain really shearing oil quickly.

So, does your car have the OLM or not? I think GM was phasing it in around that time

It has defined OCI suggestions but also references the change oil light.

Any 5w30 or 10w30 will be fine :)

If you warm your oil up all the way, go with the 7500 mile recommendation, or justify something in between like 5k.

The 3k is for Grandma who drives two miles below freezing every day without ever really warming it up.

There are good ways and bad ways to rack up lower mileage.

Have you a documented issue with mechanical shear of the VM?

That Napa oil won't be any better if there is.
