buddy of mine has the truck mentioned above, with the good 'ol 4.3 vortec, truck is rough but overall runs good. he hasnt changed the oil since he bought it a few months ago, so i checked it for him. It was way below the add mark and very dirty, but wasnt knocking or making any noises. put some 10W40 in it that he had laying around to bring it to the safe level, and when i pulled the cap it had a good bit of sludge on it. ill be changin it out tomorrow, was thinking of going with some 5W40 rotella or some 10W30 rotella, both with an ACDelco filter, for 3k miles to clean all the crud out, and then go with some 10W30 Rotella for 4-5k ocis after that? sounds like a good plan or should i go with another oil and interval?

Switch to PU after the first change as its one of the best cleaning oils. But as tig1 said, it will take awhile. Might rust away before you get the engine super clean.

I had one, was a great engine. Never failed me. Sometimes with the older ones cleaning causes problems with oil leaks, rear main, etc. Most of the junk is likely from years ago. the latest oils - nearly any oil today - is better at cleaning than what it had when it was new. Pennzoil conventional for 4-5k and I bet it will be fine for years.

Gritty material, like a hardened carbon? a cleaner called Kreen dissolves the hard stuff. You can search about it on here. I've used it, not bad. But I would wait a couple short oil changes see how it responds

Use Pennzoil conventional. It will clean a gas engine better than a diesel oil cleans a gas engine.

Not sure i agree with this but thats not the topic. If the engine is really nasty, do the guy a favor and push a few shorter intervals of regular 5w30, like Super Tech or something. After that move up to your premium oils like Pennzoil Conventional or whatever and do a few regular changes. After that do whatever fits his fancy but you really can run an engine if it is really cruddy and neglected by over cleaning to quickly.
