Hi,
This is my first UOA on this car.

1997 Honda Accord
2.2L I4
149,900 miles on the car.
7,500 miles on this oil sample.
Half stop and go/half highway.

I ran Mobil Clean 7500 for approx. 7,500 miles with an AdvancedAuto TotalGrip filter. 0.75 quart of makeup oil was added (M1 EP for the makeup oil)

Blackstone's Comments:

Lead was the only element out of line in this sample. It shows excess wear at the bearings and we think it's going to be a limiting factor in how long the oil can be run. This level isn't high enough to think you have any major problems. If you do alot of city driving and/or idling, then the lead may even be normal. 5 ppm is average after 4,900 miles on the oil. The viscosity was normal and no fuel or anti-freeze was present, though the TBN was fairly low at 1.6, so there wasn't much active additive left. Suggest staying with a 7,500 mile oil use for now.

Looks like an excellent report till you get to the lead and tin. Tin would not worry me much but the lead is definitly a problem. Consult Terry Dyson at Dyson analysis. Money will be well worth it and I have no idea on this one.
I have a 97 honda 2.2 with the first analysis comming soon. I am using Mobil 1 5w-30 and hope for good results with it.

do you have a lead foot? lead is apprx 2ppm/1000 miles so it's not outrageously high. if you want to decrease lead, you can step up in viscosity up from 5w-30. I would be happy with these results.

Tend to agree here. I was going to mention the lead foot.

Looks like a good UOA except for the lead. I've got a '95 Accord with the same engine, and I absolutely love it! I've noticed that with the 5-spd its pretty easy to lug it if you're not careful. Do you have the 5 spd, or the auto? Also, did you run any additives in the oil? I ran Seafoam in my oil and got a huge lead number that later went away.

Incidentally, I'll be changing my oil (155,000 engine miles, really close to yours

) out in the next 3 or so days and getting a UOA done, so you'll have another UOA on a motor in similar conditions to compare to soon.

Do you rev this engine much? I've noticed that my F22 runs A LOT more smoothly when it sees 3500+ rpm at least once or twice a day than when I don't rev much.

You ran this oil about 1/3 too long and it sheared as well. I'd cut back to a 5000 mile change interval and/or try a thicker, A3/B4 rated, xw-30 oil.

This is an older, 150k engine and the bearing clearances have probably opened up a bit.

At 136K miles, I had the timing belt, balancer belt and water pump replaced on this car. A friend of a friend did the work. This was against my better judgement......

Well, let's just say the car did not run as well as when I dropped it off. It had a vibration that I could feel through the gas pedal and the floor. At that point I was not a happy camper. Not happy at all... But, this friend of a friend could not fix it right. And, in the end, I'm left with the car STILL vibrating.

Here's the question....could my high lead number be the result of the engine vibrating? The timing belt could be off a tooth or the balance shafts may be off a bit. Who knows... But, I'm going to take the car in for service to correct it. I like the car too much for it to die this way!

Yesterday I put in about 4 oz. of VSOT.

This car sees a daily 100 mile round trip of morning/afternoon stop and go commuting. Also, the A/C was running the ENTIRE time of this 7,500 mile OCI. Couple the stop/go traffic with the air conditioning and sprinkle in the engine vibration due to the screwed up timing belt installation.... do you think the Mobil Clean 7500 was pretty good? Would you guys go the full 7,500 miles again?

This time I went with Mobil1 Extended Performance 5W-30 and an oversized Purolator PureOne PL24458 filter. I'm going to take it out to 10K this time. :-0

Hey, I have a 94 LX (non-vtec, SOHC) version of this engine.

195k for me now, with 6-8k m1 5w30 OCIs. I havent done a UOA yet, but I will do one soon. At this high mielage if it still works I guess dont change it!

I dont have the vibration problem like you guys said tho. I had slight vibration, but once I went to 5w30, everything disappeared. I will take pics when I take the valve cover off too..

one problem I do have is with a little oil getting into the spark plug towers, but it was very little and a long time ago.

My car eats about 1/2 quart of m1 in about 5-6k too, so seems normal! (with this high mileage)

Yep, I get into it when I can.

I really have to take care of the timing belt situation ASAP. I can't stand the vibration and what it's possibly doing to my bearings. I'm looking for a mechanic that will just reset the belt..not a whole new job. Not too many want to do it.

This car runs too good to forget about fixing it the right way. It's in awesome shape and it's a perfect car for me as far as commuting to work. And, it burns hardly any oil even with the recent change to synthetic. Since the initial synthetic OCI, it hasn't burned a drop and I'm 2.5K miles into the current OCI (M1 EP + oversized PureOne).

The Valvoline add was a good thing and should improve your next UOA. If you check the oil for wear metals I would try it at 5K. To be sure the lead comes down.If not add another dose of VSOT at 5K and check it at 7500.
