95 dodge ram 1500

What would be the best choice of gear lube for this truck?
It has the 5.2 liter v8 with about 150k on it currently running exxon gl5 80w90.
Im thinking of switching it to synthetic but havent decided to go with 75w90 or 140.
The manual allows for both i think.
I was leaning more towards the 140 since dodge isent known for stellar rear ends.
This is my frineds truck and hes pretty easy on it with occasinal towing of maybe 800 pounds.

Is the diff cover shaped like a stopsign? If it is it's a 9.25 and plenty tough for a 1/2 ton truck.

80W90 will be fine.....it's lasted this long on the stuff right? I'd be careful with synthetic on that high of a mileage rearend....you *might* stir up the gunk that's built up on the backside of the pinion and axle seals and cause a leak.

If you're going to synthetic, there's no reason to use anything heavier than 75W90 from your description. Dodge pickups were what we always used on the farm and never had rear end troubles.

99, hes had it for i believe 2 years so i have no idea about the service history but i put regular 80w90 in it last year so i guess ill stick with that. Thanks!

Mine is an '01 9.25 (open; no limited slip). I treated it with Auto-Rx for 1500-2000 miles, drained, cleaned and replaced fluid with REDLINE 75-90NS.

Have used this in other vehicles with good results. RL gear oil is great stuff.
