Hi, I'm thinking very hard about doing this now. I love the increased light out put from the Sylvania Xtravision and clear housings. My question: I just saw on a Youtube video where a person did this upgrade and he indicated the factory housing must have a reflector cap over the bulbs or the 9012s will blind oncoming drivers. My 1994 Corolla doesn't have a cap, but a tube that the bulb fits in. Does that mean the 9012 is a no go for this application? Thanks

That's correct about the no go. Your housings must have full bulb cap shields not just rings either because the 9012 doesn't have any paint on the bulb tip like the 9006 which means obscene amounts of glare for other drivers.

I would recommend Phillips xtreme vision 9006 if you don't have full bulb shields.

OK, I think I got the answer here: it looks like I'm screwed on the 9012s; you must have a full cup over the bulb since the 9012 bulb doesn't have the cover built into it like 9006 bulbs do.

Darn...

"If the shield over your low beams is a cup, and completely covers the front of the bulb, you are good to go with the HIR lamps. If it is a ring, and you can see the front of the lamp through it, you have to stick with the 9006.

Yep I just ordered new oem housings for my Buick including new +30 HIR 9012 vosla bulbs to the tune of $300.

I have been wanting to get them for a long time but finally did it. If you put 9012 into clouded/hazed housings the output will be scattered and reduced anyway, so new oem non aftermarket housings are the first start to higher light output.

Thanks again Memphis; do they make upgrade housings with the reflector cup? If not, I'm just gonna stick to the Xtravision's and if/when they burn out, I may try the +60 Phillips bulbs. I've read too many reviews where the Extreme Visions, even though they supposedly lats longer than Silver Star Ultras, still only last a year or 2 at most. I don't want to be swapping headlights in a downpour on the side of the road...

are the vosla 9012 coming from europe? or is there a seller in the usa?

They are made in Germany from the Phillips plant that vosla bought. I got them from ABQ Auto on Amazon but they are available from the GM dealer I believe the part number is GM part number 23342527

I'd strongly urge anybody who wants to upgrade their headlights to look into building a proper relay harness. When I finally got around to this last fall on my '96 I couldn't believe the improvement. Of course, it didn't help the lousy beam optics but you can't win them all.

Even if you can't swing the cost and time to build one (which isn't that expensive or difficult), AT THE VERY LEAST go through and clean your connections and especially your grounding locations. My mustang had been sitting a few years and the lights were a awful, sickly, impotent yellow which barely illuminated anything. When I cleaned the battery grounding strap to negative terminal connection it was literally like night and day (plus better engine starting!).
