When the OE 9006 bulbs (Wagner) burn out, I plan on replacing them with the 9012 bulbs.I take it that the missing black cap on the 9012 will not lead to glare for oncoming drivers since the low beam lens is patterned (scalloped). Am I right in my assumption?

Here are a couple of pictures. The low beam is on the outside, the one with the clear lens is the high beam.

The filament shield may or may not be necessary to control glare. Without knowing more about the optics its hard to say. The only headlamp format that I know of which works without a filament shield on low-beam is a complex-surface-reflector type, or a projector type. The one on the sierra is neither, but it still might be OK without a filament shield in practical terms. Install one and then stand in front of the truck facing it, and see if one side is way more blinding than the other.

Update.
I fitted a 9005, which does not have the black cap on its end, in the low beam socket on one side of the truck and did not notice any extra glare, while standing about fifty feet in front of the truck. So I am going ahead and purchasing two Philips HIR 9012s from this site
http://hirheadlights.com/
They have them for $24.55 each.

When you get them from that site would you mind posting the country of origin that is stamped on them?

This is correct. However, the HIR2 will have a far longer lifespan, and the 55W draw vs. the 65W draw. Are those enough to justify the cost? I guess that's up to each person to decide.

It was only when I was mounting the 9005 that I noticed that the bases of 9005 and 9006 were of different diameters - the 9006 is 22.2 mm (7/8in)and the 9005 is 20mm in dia.

It seems to me that the loose fit will cause the 9005 to move around when the car is driven. Also dust will make its way inside the bulb housing and eventually cause a reduction in light output, which negates the present goal of more light on the road.

So, I definitely do not want to leave the 9005 in the 9006 housing.

Could someone verify that the 9012 base diameter, where the O-ring fits,is the same as that of the 9006?

IIRC, the 9012 is the same diameter as the 9006. I had to push mine in to make them fit. It's not loose in the housing like a 9005 is.

I've used modified 9005's as 9006's before. Go to Home Depot and buy some Danco #12 O-rings and replace the stock O-ring on the 9005. This will make them fit tightly in the reflector for a better aim, and will seal it against dirt and moisture better.

"You do know that the 9005 and the HIR 9012 have the same lumen rating right?"

Wrong:

The high beam 9005 draws 65 watts and puts out 1700 lumens.
The low beam HIR12 draws 50 watts and put out 1870 lumens.

I would recommend replacing a high beam 9005 with a high beam HIR11 which draws 65 watts and puts out 2350 lumens

Ah..not so fast....you can get the 9005 +30 high efficacy (GE Nighthawk, Philips Hi-Visibility or Sylvania Xtra-vision) which are all rated at 1870 Lumens as well. I can get a Philips Hi-Vis down the street for $8 which makes it a pretty competitive alternative especially after shipping etc for the HIR9012.

I do agree the biggest bang for the buck is the HIR9011 replacement for the 9005 high beam.

Where would that be? I'm located in Alberta as well, and I was considering an upgrade at some point from my stock 9006 to a set of HIR 9012, but if, as you say, these Phillips Hi-Vis (9006 I assume) also put out 1,875 lumens and are available for just $8 on a local store shelf, then I'd much rather do that.

Also, the link to Phillips' North American aftermarket headlight page is here: http://www.lighting.philips.com/us_en/au...id=&lang=en

Their bulb lines are: EcoVision, X-Treme Power, CrystalVision 5000K, CrystalVision Ultra, NightGuide, Xenon HID, MotoVision, VisionPlus, LongerLife, BlueVision, Standard, Active Safety and 24 Volt.

Some are obviously not the ones you are referring to, but none of the possible ones have the name that you mention.

I did the 9005 swap in my Buick for 6 months before getting sick of the glare, the poor performance in inclement weather, and the bulbs noticeably decreasing in performance due to their short 150-200 hour lifespan. In that time I probably drove 100 hours using the 9005 bulbs. The swap was great when I first did it, but towards the end it was not much better than a 9006 bulb. Running them on a relay harness for extra voltage did not help matters any.

I've had the 9012 bulbs in for ~9 months now, and they're just as bright as when they went in. Inclement weather performance is greatly improved, and there's no extra glare.

Try both, and see the difference yourself.

Thanks, I will look for them at Peavey Mart. Probably won't happen until I'm on a road trip passing through a town that they're in.

A 9006 bulb does not put out 1,875 lumens, high power or not. A 9006 bulb is legally limited to 1,000 lumens, +/- 15%.

The 1,875 lumen Philips bulb mentioned is a 9005 bulb, and isn't as good of a swap as an HIR2 bulb is.

Any good off the shelf places I can walk into and buy HIR2 bulbs, besides a John Deere parts dealer? List price locally is now up tp $36 per bulb.
