Where? Mills Fleet Farm.

Where are you in MN? I know of one Fleet Farm in Winona, otherwise I thought everything west of that was Farm and Fleet.

While I think dealerships are scumbags in general, I think the $85 price tag for a Lexus's synthetic 0W20 oil change is very reasonable. I am sure you work hard to earn the money to buy such luxurious brand; therefore, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the people that work on your vehicle should get paid for their labor as well. Lexus's technicians, even at the oil change level, will be coming from better crop than those from quick lube. They need to be compensated for their time and the dealership needs to charge someone to pay for those fancy decoration and amenities.

By the way, the $48 plus tax is probably for the conventional oil change.

Personally, I wouldn't sweat the $85 oil change if I own a new Lexus. I'll just make sure I only do it once a year as long as that require the service interval. Eighty five dollars a year for an Lexus oil change is chump chain for Lexus owners.

A quick lube I know nearby charges $82.99 for this vehicle's synthetic package, opting for an OEM filter will cost $11. Plus there is an extra charge for oil over 6 liters at a cost of $12.99 per liter. Add in recycling fees and taxes(13%)...

Just for comparison

Bulk GTX oil change = $42.99
Bottles GTX = $49.99
Himi or semisyn = $57.99
Synthetic = $82.99
Castrol Edge = $119.99
TWS sport (M5, M3, etc.)= $189.99

OEM filters can range from $8 charge for Ac Delco, to $30 for Vw/Audi to $40 for a Jaguar OEM oil filter.

In conclusion, $85 at your dealer is a good price.

The oil change on my Cobalt (spec'ed for Mobil 1 due to the turbo) ran something like $75 at the dealer's so I don't think the price quoted is out of line. As an added bonus, I had the TSB regarding the intake charge tube addressed while I was there so it saved me a trip.

Agreed. This sounds very reasonable. And if the OP doesn't like it, he should do it himself. His time must not be very valuable.

Everyone should know how to change their oil, especially on a Toyota or Lexus, when you probably don't even need to jack up the car.

Better yet, find the neighborhood mechanic and give him the $85.

It is more time consuming to take the car to have oil change at either dealer or independent garage. If the oil can be changed without jack up the car using the oil extractor and the filter on top of the engine, then the whole time to do it at home can be done in less than 45 minutes even for a very slow DIYer, I took my time doing oil change for all my cars, it took me less than 30 minutes to change on the E430 but a little longer on S2000 and LS400, and I was not in a hurry. Drive the car to dealer, wait for service writer, wait for oil change then drive back home will be more than 1 hour, can be up to 2-3 hours.

Another advantage of DIY is you can change oil whenever you like, dealer has certain working hour during the week, few hours on Saturday and no service on Sunday.

The only small problem is taking the used oil to recycling center, but it can be done with other chores in the same trip.

Just DIY. SUVs are way easier since you have tons of room to work under there.

I don't think $85 is that bad for a luxury car and 7 qt of synthetic oil. Just ask us German owners what we pay for 9-10qt oil changes and weird dealer-only filters.

Hmmmm, seems to be a bit of "dealership bashing" here...

I drive a 13yr old Audi A6 Avant, I've always done my own OCs, and I work for an Audi dealership. Naturally, I do my 5k mi OCIs using the dealership's facilities(after hours) and purchase the oil/filter from the dealership's parts dept.(@ employee prices). An OE filter, DP washer, and 6qts of oil(Castrol Syntec 5W40 bulk) cost me ~$41(for the record, our retail price is $58+tx). Our service dept charges a reduced hourly rate for regular OCs. I'm not sure exactly what that rate is, but I'm sure it adds at least another $35 or so. Could I possibly afford to properly maintain an Audi if I didn't DIY and/or work for the dealership?...probably not.

Will I ever attempt to dissuade a non-DIY Audi owner from having a thorough dealership OC performed by a trained technician?...heck, no! I gotta eat too, right?

This new change will add significant dollars to maintenance that yields very little in actual fuel savings. In the long run, it will cost more just to appease the tree huggers.

But going longer between oil changes does save time. The impact on the environment is reduced with fewer dead filters and less oil being dumped some where.

Exactly, I was going to point out the same thing. 0W20 synth oil every 10,000 miles is cheaper than conventional 5W20 every 5,000 miles. Besides, less oil changes = less engine wear.

Europe used expensive oils for long OCI for a long time. Time for NA to catch up.

I don't know where everyone is getting this 10k OCI. Perhaps in US models the OCI is 10k?

The manual (for Canadians anyway) state that OCIs are every 8000 kms (5000 miles).

If the OCIs are every 10k miles, I wouldn't have even considered starting this thread.

Yes, Toyota USA OCI with 0W20 is 10,000 miles. It's probably true for Canada but things are probably lost in translation (so to speak) and the car manual has probably old info. Find some official clarification on this.

It happened to me with 2003 Corolla. Toyota went to 5,000 miles then across all their cars (mind you this was the post Toyota sludge period), yet the car manual still had the 7,500 miles regular service OCI in it. I observed the 5,000 miles OCI and sure enough UOA showed oil thickening from oxidation at 5,000 miles (on those group 1/2 SL oils of those times).

While I'm happy about this transition, I can see it could be a chore to watch dealers actually pour Toyota's 0W20 rather than some cheap 5W20. I know VW dealers did a lot of that switchero.

The official clarification is (and this coming from the dealer):

2011 RX 350 has a 8000 km (5000 miles) OCI. 0W-20 is the required oil.

As a long time reader of BITOG and an owner of two vehicles, I know that dino oil can last 5000 miles no problems and synthetics at least 8000-10000 miles.

Yep. If a dealer can get twice as much traffic through their service bays by halving the factory recommended service intervals, they'll do just that.

My dealer only charges $62.55 plus tax for the Mobil-1 oil change. And for Valvoline Synthetic blend; $39.55 plus tax.

Filter is worth $7 each, so at around $75 for oil and labour, I think I will be better off taking my business elsewhere.

Walmart sells 0w-20 Mobil-1 and Valvoline for $7-$8 a quart. Figure the dealer charges more, plus filter, plus $120/hr labor. $85 is outrageous for a BITOGer, but it isn't for the average person who can afford a Lexus.
