70,000 miles on a oil filter

They have idiot lights these days for people like this.
I think every car has a oil change reminder

My late grandfather did this. He was a good man and took good care of his stuff. He hand built a 200sq ft shed on a poured slab in his back yard, by hand. He taught high school, then taught at college. He grew up on a farm and worked his way into a professional career. He raised pigs, grew corn, and grew up in the Great Depression.

the last car he bought himself was a shiny gold 1984 civic. It was the oddest thing. I drove the car a few hundred miles in his final move closer to us so we could help out. The thing had all sorts of oil lights and me pulling over, seeing it ok on the dipstick, more lights, topping off, maybe a little over, more red lights, added some sort of high wear additive, limped it into town.

dealer took a look at it - original filter and drain plug markings. 60,000 miles on the original oil. Granddad said it simply didn’t need it, and he kept it topped off.

the dealer hot tanked the engine but was nervous about sending it. Tbh, if sound and mpg means anything, it was rock solid. I think he and my mom traded it… for a special option civic specially ordered with every single option deleted, including the lcd clock. It had no clock. It certainly had no tach. That was in the 90s.

im not sure what convinced him of this, but he was not irresponsible or mechanically lacking.

My neighbor owned a nice Lexus. He never did maintenance on anything. He killed the engine and complained to me that such an upscale car should have never had it happen. Went out and bought a Mercedes. He moved away. Probably damaged that one too.

Had a friend in High School who's parents believed oil changes were a scam by the oil companies.
They never changed oil, just topped off. When their 1960's Beetle sluged to the point it wouldn't run, they claimed it was because the oil companies put chemicals in the oil to cause the failure. People and conspiracy theories. 🤷‍♀️

We didn’t have a lot of money growing up, so I understand when people say they don’t have money.

That said, we always kept up with our vehicles as best we could. Because not being able to go to work or costly repairs isn’t an easier situation to figuring out than an oil change. QS 10W30, EG Fram, and a 10mm socket wrench got us through some hard times. Being broke and smart aren’t mutually exclusive.

If you cannot afford the servicing costs once a year then buy the car with a service plan.

Or take the bus.

Your neighbor: Lexus is junk, getting Mercedes.

This guy: Audi is junk, getting Lexus.

I think a lot of you have a tough time with critical thinking and knowing that many people, yes, even those who can afford on appearance only, a German car, will not perform maintenance, especially when they are leasing it.

They simply don't care, they have no intelligence on mechanical maintenance and have never financially suffered serious consequences of not doing maintenance.

I wish dealers would impose an end of lease fine/penalty for not getting the car serviced or adding aftermarket tunes.
