$6k taillight (assembly) replacement Hummer EV

GM: “Each light in the housing has its own microconductor”

Congratulations GM, you took something the aftermarket has been doing for years, addressable LED’s, and made it far far more complicated and expensive for no apparent reason.
Aftermarket junk isn't exactly reliable, and it is very labor intensive.

Have you priced custom head/tail lights?

Have you seen the tail lights in question?

IIRC some new BMWs have OLED tail lights.
I know Audi uses OLED taillights in certain RS models. Has don’t for a few years.

A LED type light unit should be reliable if well made and not damaged. It’s not something I would expect to need to replace during the life of the vehicle unless damaged.

Go price some control unit on modern cars. A ZFAS will cost you £2500. A engine control unit is £1000. Both of these are generic unit that can be used across more than one model. Lights cannot.

That’s what I pay insurance premiums for.

In what way(s) has GM made the lighting more complicated and expensive? To put it another way, what Has GM done that the aftermarket companies have not? Thanks.

Here is $18k* worth of tail lights.

Who cares if its a OLED or animated, it is a tail light for cripe sake, it does what a tail light needs to do perfectly fine. This is another perfect example of just because you can make it doesnt mean you should.
And that's your opinion.

Your opinion does not affect the component cost. Complexity and production numbers do.

I have yet to hear anyone explain why a tail light needs to that complex. Obviously the one on S560 AMG works just fine and meets all the regulations and standards.

People like fancy **** Trav.

Are we talking about why the Hummer has these lights, or why these lights cost what they cost?

This isn't a utility vehicle. It doesn't have commonality with a base model.

As a matter of fact @Trav, what about the Mercedes with Swarovski crystals in the headlights? Those retail for over $6,500 each.

What about the S65 itself? Surely the S350 is enough. What moron would spend the money on an S65?

It just seems incredibly complex for no reason. GM’s answer doesn’t help that perception.

Wow, I can't imagine a Wrangler as a daily driver- especially with a Tahoe in the drive. Not a judge at all- just an observation. I owned a 2000 TJ. Was awesome for weekend errands. Would be a horrible daily driver IMHO. Heck, just having a conversation on a cell phone was brutal.

I'd take a Camry or corolla any day of the week over a Wrangler for a commuter vehicle.

Here is a pic of my 2000. Installed a fill traction lift and American Racing rims, and 33s. Fun toy- but would never be my commuter vehicle of choice. View attachment 121106

Not really that primitive - heated leather - Alpine etc …

There is a huge difference in the cars quality, the Hummer is a 30-40K vehicle with a 30K battery and 10-15K in drive motors plus markup. The AMG has a hand built engine and lots of custom workmanship. You are tying to justify Rolls Royce parts prices on what is a basically a mediocre quality rolling GM iphone.
The Hummer wont be around long, I would bet on it.
