Getting there!

And the actual latest from Blackstone...

My new "oil consultant" now has a soup of Chevron Delo 15-40/Amsoil 15-40/Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment in there right now....he is expensive but I do see the wear numbers coming down....

Looks good sg. I think your going in the right direction. Take a look at M1 5w-40. I think that could give you the best of both worlds. Better start up and great High Temp protection. You'll see it's one of the best oils on the board and the UOA's prove that.

Oil consultant?

I work for free. If you want a real guru, hire Terry, but there goes any chance of using Amsoil.

Seriously - It sure looks like the Amsoil lead was a strange fluke. Like racing fuel or some bearing break-in.

The brew should do great.

Did you get that stuffed Tiger from an Exxon Superflo mail in offer?

Buy a case of Superflo & get a free stuffed Tiger.

I'd love to see M1 5w-40 in this engine. I think it would do very well. What do ya think sgt. ? Even the Amsoil 5w-40.

Buster, I agree, I think any of the major 5w40s would do well in this engine.

Just to be different, I'd like to see Redline 5w40 in this engine.

Thanks for the comments guys.....my plan is to get the absolute best UOA/Performance I can get off of a dino/syn/VSOT soup......then I plan on running some straight Synthetics as mentioned for a real world comparison.....I have already run Mobil 1 0-40 and it wasnt this engines Huckleberry for sure.....Buster the Mobil 1 5-40 and yes Patman the Redline 5-40 I will give 2 runs ( two fills and drains) and test the 2nd drain with BlackStone....I did run the Amsoil 5-40 (European).....sounded like the rods were gonna come through the block.....oil temp shot up 30 degrees higher than normal.....I didnt take any chances.....I drained it after two runs....I realize this isnt your average grocery getter.....but never the less a good project for a high performance engine/oil exercise....On a side note....so many bash the KN CAI....I continue to receive excellent results in rather dusty (Big Bend Race/Goliad, Texas runs)....so the KN is doing its job of excellent flow and filtration.....

I did run the Amsoil 5-40 (European).....sounded like the rods were gonna come through the block.....oil temp shot up 30 degrees higher than normal...

What? When? Sorry to not exactly believe you but the oil would not a) cause noise b) cause a temp rise of 30 degrees, and yet a 15w40 (Rotella) didn't do the same....something else was very wrong.

Please give more details.

Yup...just as written.....not an Amsoil basher by any means here Pablo.....everything went back to normal as soon as I drained that stuff....just as written.....Now Amsoil 15-40 was a very good oil for this motor....I dunno why/what was the issue with the 5-40 but my LS1 did not like it one bit.....

In viscosity those oils aren't THAT different - I'm just struggling with the root cause that's all.

I would be suspect of the oil filter or some other cause of lack of oil flow, like the oil pump losing prime.

What kind of filter? Did you change filters?

Yeah we always change the filters....dual Perma Cool w/ 2 AC Delco's ...we pre fill them obviously.....my engine builder/machinist is also my Amsoil guy...I am an Amsoil preferred customer.....he and I both instantly noticed the "sound"......the oil temps climbed up to 215-220 where normally the stay around 180...BIG OIL COOLER:).....no biggie though as I have had the exact same issue (temps) with GC....we drove it to the track ....OP was rock solid at 40lbs at cruise and 50lbs at WOT....we made 2 runs that day.....just never got happy with the obvious "noise" .....not saying it wasn't lubricating well...just two caveats we both noticed.....so we changed it out.....now nobody can ever accuse me of not having the guages to watch what is going on inside and outside of that motor:) Guages I got....
 -

Of course you see an A4....3500 Stall convertor and TransGo shift kit....coupled to custom made gears in a custom rear differential....bang bang bang bang and your through the traps:)
Nobody can shift as fast as this thing....I dont road race or Auto RX....I run some very high RWHP M6's....they always struggle off the line and snap more driveshafts than I would care to experiance myself....My biggest issue is keeping the front wheels on the ground...

Um, am I the only one who thinks the first lead number is probably an error? 83 down to 2 in one oil change?

I have a hard time believing that.

I mean, unless sgtgeek got inside that motor with a pile of shop towels when he changed the oil, there's be enough lead-laden old oil to make the second UOA show at least 8-12 ppm ... even if the new oil allowed zero PPM of wear during the interval.

sgtgeek, I'd run just plain Chevron Delo400 15w40 in Texas and change it every 2,000-2,500 miles if you really want to baby this thing. It already has a killer additive package.

Is cool/cold starting really an issue for you? If so, I'd still use Delo400 15w40 ... but I'd throw a quart or two of Delo400 0w30 in there during the coldest months.
