6000 mile oil filters - in 1965

Just to add some info to the "how long do filters last" question.

I saw a restoration show on Speed Channel tonight where they are restoring a '65 vintage racing Cobra. They'd located an original Ford/Rotundra oil filter and very clearly on the box it was marked "6000 MILE LIFE TYPE"

Here is something from my owners manual for my '99 dodge dakota. now this is for non severe service, change oil every 7500 miles and filter every other oil change. So one would change the filter every 15k. Of course they recomend a mopar filter which from the last mechanic I talked to is nothing more than a fram. if severe duty, oil change every 3k but filter is still every other change. On a side note, Chrysler/dodge engineers have been recomending every other oil change for filters since the '70s.

I remember reading the owners manual on my neighbors then new 60 Rambler.
1000 mile changes and the filter every other time.
I DO have trouble remembering what happened yesterday though! (G)

I do recall exactly the same recommendation from the manual that came with my parents' '73 Dart (225 Slant Six). Even then, at age 12, I wondered why not just do the filter every time as a form of cheap insurance? Having now owned my own cars for about 25 years, I've never skipped changing the filter with the oil.

It was about that time that Ford was claiming six month or 6000 mile service intervals as a marketing tool. GM and Chrysler were still recommending 3-4000 at that time. Since the Ford warranty was only two years or 24,000 miles back then, there was not much risk for Ford with extended oil and filter changes.

As I recall, those oil filters were not pleated paper, but a fiber type of media that pretty much filled the can, the same as Wix filters of the day.

That's correct, Jimbo. A '66 Chrysler Imperial ad I recently linked to mentions "3 month/4,000 mile oil changes," so this may have largely been marketing-driven. But wouldn't one have doubts about mid-60's vintage oil lasting 6K miles without truly being compromised..? Engines built in 2004 can beat up their oil in that period, so I can't help but suspect that 6K in 1965 would have been pushin' it.
