Hi all,

I am looking for an oil that will best protect my engine yet still allow the best performance for 2.4 Turbo Dodge Neon.

The engine is highly modified and is running a somewhat large turbocharger.

I am a fan of Amsoil, but would consider any option.

BTW, I also need an oil recommendation for break-in, as I just rebuilt the engine with new internals.

The car is used for drag racing, but also for road testing/driving.

Thanks for all the inputs.

Christian

Wow that's a lot of power for a 2.4 litre. Amsoil Racing oils, or Redline, Mobil 1.

How are the bearing clearances? What weight oil are you looking for?

Amsoil makes phenomenal products. I'd say the ATM 10w-30 would be fine. Maybe even the AMO 10w-40. If you wanted the "beef", their dominater line of racing oils could be an option. I'm assuming the Dodge 2.4L turbo engines use roller valvetrains, which wouldn't necessitate a high zinc racing oil for higher hp applications, but if you wanted max protection:

Plenty of 450+ hp daily driven srt-4's down here running the same mobil1 10w-30 that was spec'd when new from OEM. If it's not a stock bottom end I'd ask your builder.

Can I assume that you've got maybe 15 seconds of WOT before you're overheating? Oil will be in there for hours instead of miles.

I dunno if a 30 grade would make it here. I'd probably go with the Dominator 15w-50.

ask your builder, fine tune from there based on oil pressure, temp...etc

Stock dodge 2.4's work great with 0w30 on up to Xw40's. I highly dought you are on a stock bottom end, stock oiling system, including the cooler. If I didnt have a builder to ask and wasnt sure where to start, I would dump some Redline 10w40 in there.

Are you modded to have a 7qt sump?

Edit: only 19psi for 600hp? get more fuel and really open it up.......lol

post pics of your motor please, then I can post a pic of my measly almost stock motor so people can see the difference.

Bearing clearances are 0.0020'' on the mains and rods.

Standard SRT4 oil pan and pump and oil cooler. But since its not and SRT block, it doesn't have oil squirters.

Since it is street driven as well, is still has complete cooling system, but running a 180 deg thermostat, instead of the 195 deg stocker.

I am rebuilding the engine with better internals and targetting 700 whp. Old engine did 563 whp @ 19 psi.

I was thinking Xw30 or Xw40 weights.

Here are a few pictures:

Nice build. What size turbo are you running? What fuel? It must suck to have all that power and not be able to put it to the ground

. I posted a thread looking for oil recommendations as well for my Evo IX. Still not quite sure what I'm going to go with yet.

With someting THAT serious, I'd run Redline or Amsoil, and I wouldn't run less than a 40-weight.

The suggestion of Amsoil AMO 10W-40 is probably a good one, or Redline 10W-40.

Nice build.

Nice build!! It's always good to remember that according to your bearings and cylinder walls, they could be in a 1200HP V8 (or an 1800hp V12!) for all they care, because thats the duty they individually see. I would probably run Redline 5w40 or 10w40 in that beasty. No way would I skimp out with the lightly additized, OTC Energy Conserving nonsense, "synthetic" or not. Happy motoring!

The balancer shafts are removed from their housing, with the oil feed plugged.

I keep only the bare assembly (no chain, tensioner, shafts, etc) only to fill some space and baffle the pan somewhat, along with adding stiffness to the engine block.

Thanks!

Like in the Evo thread, I'd recommend the M1 15w50, it's what I run in my modded turbo 4 cylinder and I'm nowhere near your output. Not even half. lol Car runs great on it though.

If Amsoil is your thing, then I'd go with the Dominator 15w50. Otherwise maybe Redline 10w40 or Motul 5w40.

I think the Mobil 1 15w50 would make you pretty happy though.

I would run the Amsoil Diesel 5w-30. I would guess what do you want to do for drain interval and how rich are you going to run this once you tune it.

I have 2 2.4 turbos in my PT GT's and 4 other Dodge turbos with 2.2 and 2.5's. If your clearances are tight you can run the 30W and the Diesel has a stout additive packeage and higher viscosty at 100C of 11.7 and HTHS of 3.5

I run this and at 100K miles when I removed the valve cover you could eat off it.

Maybe do a UOA on a 30wt then a 40wt syn oil. Amsoil 5w-30 HDD is pretty stout for a 30 wt oil or the 10w-40 Amsoil or their Dominator 10w-30.

Other good brands out there as well. Looks like a stout four cylinder engine. Good luck

Never thought of the Amsoil HDD, thats a good option too. I dont like the 15w50 recommendation for the stock oiling system along with the 180 t-stat. During your daily driving, your coolant/oil heat exchanger will keep your oil temps in the 180 degree range.

Get an oil temperature gauge. Maybe two sensors in different locations, and a switch for which one the gauge reads.
This is you determining factor.
She will get real hot in certain locations with that projected HP.
The oil viscosity should be matched for the worst case scenarios that you observe.
