$60,000 Hyundai Ioniq 5 battery replacement quote

Fair and good points. I would hardly claim the price of the battery is a non-issue (also not sure you meant that for me). Even a $15K replacement is ridiculous in my book. I just don't think condemning HK, the brands, over two instances is deserved.
No I wasn't commenting towards you. I don't believe this is a Hyundai/Kia issue. I think it's an industry issue, probably due to issues sourcing lithium, causing the high prices/availability issues with replacement batteries.

I disagree, I think it's an H/K issue with respect to not properly planning for this sort of issue with the only option being the replacement of a massively expensive pack, despite many of the parts being available by themselves.

If you are going to tout modular packs, which most of the majors do, as compared to say Tesla, then what is the point of having your dealer and/or the manufacturer concluding that you need to replace the entire thing in a situation like this? We've had @Audiman comment that they replace components, and I know BMW does, not sure about Ford or GM in actual application.

Hopefully the pushback from this is the kick in the rear that H/K needs to get this sorted and parts available to service/repair the battery assembly so that people aren't getting quotes for full replacement.

Nobody who has worked in the industry for any amount of time can deny that VW can be very expensive to repair.
The problem here is that people are trying to deny that this battery cost is actually an issue and they have no proof of that other than their own opinion. We could (and probably will) have several more news stories of similar situations and all of it will be considered "fake news". Eventually it will be "old news" and people will just eventually become accustomed to the fast that modern electric cars will be disposable. Obviously that's what the manufacturers want, because more sales means more $ in their pockets. All we can do in the mean time is try to fight it and vote with our wallets.
One big takeaway I have (and ws6 is the perfect proof of this) is that a lot of current EV owners will disbelief anything negative that they hear. By the time they realize maybe there was some truth to it, it will be too late.
My issue is the information is sketchy at best. Batteries are expensive, no question. But none of us know the whole story.
If I took a SWAG, I would say it happened somewhat as reported but the newness of the vehicle contributed greatly. That's my 2 cents.

I think it’s a bit of both. I wouldn’t touch a Hyundai product with a 10 foot pole though after how they’ve handled ICEs and the theft issue. Their dealers still have economy level service and mentality also.

Pretty much every company has done some shady stuff. Just gotta buy the best engineered compromise from them and ignore the sleaze out there.

I’ll say I find even the scheduled maintenance to be pricy with VWs. I also think it’s worth it for what you get with some models. The known issue on the GTIs is the water pump and they’ve extended the warranty for this issue so it doesn’t upset me. Then again I’m more forgiving with vehicles I like. It’s still a lot different a $60k battery replacement but I don’t believe this story at face value.

This specific case the insurance company told the customer he will be paying significantly higher rates following this claim. So much so that he considered not making the claim but he couldn't afford to just throw away $50,000.
That's a weird statement. Be out a totaled car, pay $50k, or have a raised insurance rate. I wonder what the most cost effective option is there. 🤷

Lol. 7 pages where “argument “ ends with: my HK is good as Koenigsegg. What do you really expect to talk then?
Interesting take. But ok. HK and Tesla are the only other 20k+ rpm motors Im aware of. Maybe the Rimac and a few hyperexotics. Dark Matter deaerves mention due to its size vs power, but its low rpm.

Not surprised it made the print media.
The way the story was described (all over the place) with contradictions between dealer and manufacturer it is surprising the insurance company will take the hit without a fight? Since it sounds like there was confusion between the actual costs given out between the dealership vs manufacturer. Plus talk about not enough qualified / experienced techs who know what can be repaired / replaced vs what must be scrapped. This story has all kind of angles / assumtions so far. Seems insurance companies should proceded with great caution until lots of EV maintenance & repair issues get ironed out.

Buy a pedal bike, and forget the rest lol 😁🤣
I only ever had liability insurance because for years my cars were all worth $200-400 then I splurged for the $1500 one that I had for 12 years. The math wouldn't even come close to working out on this one as far as losses, because it's an expensive vehicle, but if you're insurance is going through the roof and you're going to lose out on potential long term discounts from lack of claims/incidents, you could just cut your losses and buy a $3000 Corolla or something, or even a bicycle!
I actually did commute to my 2 jobs on my mountain bike for a little bit, while sharing my 83 Caprice with my deadbeat ex girlfriend. Times were tough.

I took collision insurance off my 2014 F150 a couple years ago. As a careful driver, I don't have at fault accidents, so why waste the money. It often surprises me how much money some waste on insurance.
Buy only what you absolutely need, the rest is a waste of money in my opinion.
I have a vintage class motorcycle, it costs me almost nothing to insure, more things should be like that.
