I compared six models of oil filter that I've used on my 1989 Jaguar XJ40 (4L straight 6 engine) over the years, posting full details at this Jaguar forum (bits of metal are (mainly?) from cutting open the cans with a reciprocating saw):

Models shown (left to right):
  • Baldwin BT364 (made in USA), filter material: 153x9.3cm = 1,423cm^2
  • Ryco Z133 (made in ???), filter material: 272x8.3cm = 2,258cm^2
  • Mann W930/13 (made in Germany), filter material: 315x7.4cm = 2,331cm^2
  • UFI 2354400 (made in Indonesia), filter material: 288x6.8cm = 1,958cm^2
  • Baldwin B7424 (made in USA), filter material: 181x6.6cm = 1,195cm^2
  • Champ PH2905 (made in USA), filter material: 184x6.2cm = 1,141cm^2
Baldwin and Ryco used louvers in the centre tube, while Mann, UFI, and Champ used holes. However Mann only has holes at the far end of the tube, while the UFI and Champ filters have a plastic tube blocking off the holes except at the end. Presumably the tube allows them to use the same filter cartridge from other models, but why should it only have holes at the end anyway?

To further my confusion I recently bought a home-brand filter on clearance that has holes all the way down the centre tube, but no plastic pipe blocking them off. So is that safe to use or not? I can't think why more oil flow though the sides of the centre tube is bad, but then the others wouldn't add the plastic block-off tubes for no reason...

So what's the plastic tube for?

Stand pipe to prevent oil draining out through the center tube. Some filters may also use an anti-siphon check valve in the center tube. Not many filters use the stand pipe or anti-siphon check valve.

Ah right, an extra feature then (surprising in the cheaper filters), and not to do with holes vs louvers. Thanks for that!

Since the filter mounts horizontally on the Jag's engine block, I guess the standpipe doesn't really make much difference there.

True ... the filter is probably specified for some other engines too, which may have the filter mounted near vertical with the base down.
