5W40 Instead of 10W40?

My Generator manual says to use 10W40 For some reason, So I use 10W40 Synthetic. But its almost $9 a quart and not the easiest to find, walmart only has it in one brand. the rest are synthetic blend. 5W40 European can be found at rock auto for $5.50 a quart, So if anything it would just perform better if the generator was left in the cold?

Yes, a 5w-40 is most likely going to be more group III base oil to boot. It will have good cold properties. Save your money & get that Euro oil.

Yes, 5W40, 0W40(and even 10W40) are all fine.
But, how much to ship it from RockAuto to your home?
Wouldn't it just be cheaper per quart to buy a 5 qt jug of 10W40(or what ever oil) and always have it on hand?
Maybe, look at some of the threads that members post here about a particular grade of oil being on sale such as e.g., a 6 qt box(or 5 qt jug) of XXX brand oil being on sale or something to that nature.

I buy big orders from rock auto all the time, it can be shipped free with my next order. anything somewhat small like this is covered under a one flat rate cost.
i have no vehicles that use anything like this, honda is all 0W20 and all that, so id rather just buy the quart so there's no risk of it going bad from sitting around.

I try to use a 5 or 0w for generators, especially if they have a pull start (easier to pull while cold). $1 is a cheeseburger.. That supplies body fuel for a while so it's worth something right.

At rock auto it's $6.50 for 1qt of 5w40 FVP Full synthetic, so I think I'll go with that. Only needs 1/2qt per change. If 0W40 is ever the same price I'd go with that too. It has electric start but it usually pulls very easily.

Turns out JTP STP Knockoff is only $6 at Walmart and quaker state is $0.01 less than rock auto FVP, so it looks like I'll get JTP

I use 0-40 in my whole house generator. Good protection for cold and hot. Only change it every 2 years. The Odyssey battery installed in 2012 is still working great.

Assuming there's nothing to preclude a 5w-40 HDEO, that or M1 0w-40 are two really good, inexpensive, and available options.

It's what I would use in just about anything that calls for 10W40, because it'll work just fine and it's always available at WM for a reasonable price. That is assuming it had to be synthetic. If all I needed was conventional 10W40, I'd go with the cheapest oil that meets the required spec.
