Hi,
Can anyone tell me how Castrol Edge 5w40 ACEA A3/B4 compares with Shell Ultra Helix 5w40 ACEA A3/B4 ?
I have been using the S.ultra helix for years but there was a half price sale for the castrol at Repco Australia so wondered how they compare. Anything to save a bit....
Cheers
Drew

Different base stock would be my guess - GTL for the Shell and unless Castrol are buying GTL base from Shell it will be a standard Group 3 base.

You can look up the tech sheets on the australia shell and castrol pages for the tech differences, but there wont be a great deal in it.

What's it to be used in?

I had a "oh crap I forgot that sale was on" moment, and went to check it - looks like that sale is over... Doh.

I stocked up though on the shell helix ultra from sparesbox.com.au a while back for a 50 bucks per 5 litre bottle, they do good sales every now and then.

Thanks very much, Ill have a look. I can see the Shell has GTL, but no idea about base stock for Castrol.
Ive been using it in toyota v8 4.7 land cruiser 2uz-fe.
Yeah the half price $42 was what grabbed me... the Shell was still nearly $80
Cheers

For that old bus I doubt it will care too much what oil you throw in it so long as its not total garbage :)

Just keep an eye out, something usually goes on sale in this grade for the 50ish mark pretty often. Got some Valvoline 5w40 synthetic last year for $45 delivered on eBay for the Renault which like your cruiser is very unfussy about oil :)

I had intended to grab some of the Castrol at $42 though, annoyed I forgot about it... whoops.

Ive read a bit about the 2uzfe motor not being too fussy on oil.... just that Ive been using it for quite a while and it got me wondering how they differ.
Thanks for the sparesbox.com.au link... I'll keep an eye on that

Yeah, its a big old lazy thing :) As opposed to my Alfa Romeo with a small highly strung turbo with a tricky hydro/electric valve system - I'm a hell of a lot more OCD with oil in that thing...

until others will chime in, there is no comparison that shell with that castrol. that shell is considered one of the best oils in the europe.castrol 5-40 is mediocre oil considering its synthesis.
but if you choose by price and not quality then go with castrol

Hi... is XOM basestock good/bad or just a comment?

I'm looking at their 10 tenths premium 0W-40 which has PAO apparently (and assume XOM base as well given the same company)

XOM and Shell are one of the few bosses in this matter. Most known companies buy to them all or partial product, so don't worry about XOM bases, they are innovating continuosly even back and forth to optimize costs/performance, simply check and compare.
