Here are the results of my first UOA on my 2007 HHR with a Ecotec 2.2 powerplant (automatic)

Ran Factory Fill in it to about 1100 miles and then changed out to the Valvoline 5W30 All Climate and ran that to just under 3K miles. Filter used was a Supertech 9018. GM's OLM said 78% remaining when I did the change.

Silicone is high as they mentioned..does the explanation they gave make sense? Should I be concerned at all about the nickel or the Maganese?

Little amazed that the sodium reading was so low especially as it has been reported that Mobil 5000 is the FF. Castrol 5W30 GTX is in the sump now...debating whether to do another change in 3K miles and make the change to Pennz Plat

Comments good or bad? I'm not familiar at all with the Ecotec or it's tendencies

Goose,
Valvoline (white bottle) conventional is probably a better choice than GTX.. See Autoblog's test
accord-oil-analysis-(resized-450).jpg

8000 on GTX and 8700 on Valvoline... read the full story
http://rids.autoblog.com/2006/08/02/determining-oil-change-intervals-via-analysis/

Ofcourse they put a caveat
"Castrol GTX 5W20 was used for the first test, while Valvoline 5W20 was used for the second round of analysis. This doesn't necessarily mean that the latter should be called a better oil, but it does seem better suited for this particular engine"

You got a large overdose of calcium, phos and zinc in that Valvoline conventional you purchased. Your numbers are eerily similar to Synpower.

Good or bad??

Certainly not bad -- but a better description would be "lucky". Most-all times, that calcium number would be 17-19 -- phos would be in the 6s -- zinc in the 5s

Thanks Trip..good to know...that oil was from one of the 5 packs that Wally World was selling some time ago for the "Cars" movie. Guess I got a decent pack lol

Any concerns on the Nickel or Maganese?

Wrong guy to ask Goose! I am strictly a backyard numbers reader -- not a units # interpreter - like some of the gurus here. Blackstone never mentioned either - that's a positive sign you're good-to-go.

wear read at less than 10ppm. If anything, break in wear, especially silicon. looks good to my untrained eye. plan on using the olm?

I will eventually...right now I'm doing 3K changes on dino and will use the OLM when I put synth in(if I do it soon..may run my stash of dino out first)

That sounds like a good idea BR.. I have a bunch of Shell dino and a lot of the old Havoline formula to use up

In fact I just poured out a few bottles of the old Mobil tri-Synth Formula (SJ) into a jug to get dumped at AA along with about 7 or 8 samples from my Matrix that I took but never sent in

Oh I also have 5 qts of Kendall Synth Blend that I have never used that I forgot I had.....

That is one strong TBN if i've seen one for almost 3000 miles

You know, I was thinking the same thing...that TBN is pretty high for 3000 miles...I gotta say that the Valvoline AC did impress me!

BlueGoose, I think this run of Valvoline did great in your HHR. I'm anxious to see how the Castrol will compare. I think the 5w30 is the correct vis. for this motor after seeing the report comparing the two 20w samples. Both those samples had 8 and 10 ppm of bearing lead in them where as your sample had 0. Even at the 8-8700 mile marks of the other two oils it shouldn't raise pb to 8-10ppm if the oil is performing like your 30w did. You sure look like your on the right track to me.
I'm doing my first HHR oil change in the morning with just under 2k on the factory fill. I just bought some NAPA 5w30 and a NAPA Gold filter. I'm gonna take that fill to apx. 3k as you did and see what I get. Are you planning on running syn. oil eventually or sticking with dino?

Thanks guys-

Not sure yet snoboy.....I have a whole bunch of dino in my garage to use...I think I may go with Kendall Synthetic Blend my next change and run that out for 4-5k. I got a free case of the Pennz Plat so that will go in right before it starts to get cold for the winter.

If you aren't already on at chevyhhr.net you should swing by and check out the site. Great place for HHR owners..of course you already nay be a member under a different name

Thanks, actually I aready joined under the same name. I just haven't made any posts yet. I sent in a virgin sample of the NAPA 5w30 just for kicks to see what it's really made of.
