5w30 for '01 Durango 4.7?

I got to give my new baby the treatment it deserves, so it's getting an oil change with Schaeffer's Supreme 7000. 5W30 is the recommended weight...Is this ok, or should I perhaps run 10W30?

Also, I've always been a fan of Schaeffer's Moly EP oil treatment. Would it accomplish anything in this engine, or should I not waste my money?

I was thinking 5 1/2 quarts of 5w30 Schaeffer's with a bottle of Moly EP the first oil change, then skip the EP the next time around and thereafter. Sound like a plan?

Where do you guys buy Schaeffer's oil ? Is it a boutique oil like Amsoil ?

GT Mike: Right now I am running Supertech Synthetic in my D. 2003 4.7 Durango with 60,000+ miles. I started using synthetic from day 1. I do all my own maintanance work. Once my supply of ST runs out I am switching to Pennzoil Platinum. I bought 4 5-quart jugs this weekend. Schaffers is a good oil from what I have heard but there are alot of good synthetics out there that aren't as expensive. My first D got 130,000 trouble free miles and ran like a top when I traded it in for the one I have now. Good oils and filters and you will be A OK. I use the Amsoil SDF-15 filters. They are oversized and add about another whole quart to my engine. Enjoy the 4.7. It is a good strong engine that will last a long time if you treat it right.

In Wisconsin you surely have cold weather yet to come, because of that I'd pick 5w30 over 10w30. Does the Moly EP additive thicken oil? If so I'd wait until warm weather to use it.

I've had great results with Schaeffer 7000, both 5w30 & 10w30. The only things I've ever added to Schaeffer in my car are Lube Control(at fill & thru OCI), & once or twice a little Schaeffer Neutra about 600 miles before oil change.

I'd go Mobil 1 5w30 SM. It's a little thicker when hot.

I can get Schaeffer's for $3.06 a quart from my buddy's speed shop. The little if any money I'd save on another brand is insignificant. I'll be running Wix filters on it.

Are you a member on either www.dakota-durango.com or the DOC ( www.durangoclub.com )?

I'm Mopar Mike on both sites. The "GT" came from when I owned my Pontiac Grand Prix...The first non-Chrysler product I owned in close to 10 years!

I have a 4.7 in my 02 Jeep, run Amsoil 0W-30, no issues. Also use the 0w30 in my 00 Durango with the 5.9, again no issues.

I dont think 5w30 would be a problem and would be better in the winter.

I am using 10w30. I am going to continue to use it year round. It does not get that cold here in Maryland really. The truck seems to like it well enough. Nice smooth idle. Smoother than when I was using M1. I am going to shoot for 300,000 miles out of this truck. I am sick of car notes and now I don't have one I am really enjoying it.
