5w-30 or 5w-20??

GM says not to run 5W20 in any engine of theirs not calling for it. If you want to try a 20wt I would try Redline 5W20! It has a better HTHS then some 5W30's so it is unlikely to cause any problems. It is the only 5W20 I would ever consider running in an engine that does not call for a 5W20!

I know Toyota is adamint that one shouldnot run a 5W20 in any engine or model year not listed on their TSB as engine failure could occur. So the fact that my Mom's 2007 Camry with 2AZ-FE engine can use 5W20 and my 2003 Camry with 2AZ-FE engine cannot does not get my panties in a twist at all! You gain nothing switching from a nice synthetic 5W30 to a synthetic 5W20 or a 5w30 conventional to a 5w20 conventional!Their is no magic in the 5W20 label. In fact going to a 0W30 instead of a 5W30 would gain you more in terms of fuel economy then going from a 5W30 to a 5W20. In fact my Mom's Camry is running just fine on Mobil 1 5W30 inspite of that annoying 5W20 recomendationon the oil fill cap!

Um, no, its not me. I only got this Ion last year. The only Saturn related forum I have been on is the Ion forum for Ion owners. I've never heard of saturn forums until you mentioned it. Is it a good place to get info from? do you have a link?

Dodge did something similar with the 2.7L's, the earlier ones in the Intrepid platforms you could run 5w30, but later on when they started putting them into the Sebrings and Stratuses, Dodge was factory filling them with 5W-20. I do not know if there were any changes to that motor internally or with clearances or anything that allowed for the 20 wt, so your toyota scenario I've seen happen before. Intersting to say the least.

Good to know that GM recommends against that, and that was all I was looking for in terms of information. Wanted to know ahead of time beforehand. Like I said earlier, I just saw how Wallmart has MC semi 5-w20 for like $12 5 quarts, which is a great deal, and before I tried it, I'd see what the concensus was. I'd say you've answered it definitively.

well, lets see. I clicked that link and see that same screen name on many places. I don't have an Ipod, so its not me on the Ipod forum. I don't have a Sansa but my kids do, so its not me on the Sansa forum. Up until last spring I didn't own a Saturn, and the postings by the "Froggy81500" on that saturn forum was before I even owned this car. I didn't even bother looking at the rest.

am i in northern ny i live in ogdensburg on the stlawrence river.i guess that does not make me upstate or down state.5/30 and 5/20 work great here some still use 10/30.

The North Country! Good air up there. My dad has a small spot of land in Ohio, near Hinckley. Love it up in the 'Dacks.

After seeing 10w30 start to gel up on a -20F morning, I've pretty much stayed away from it.

people from both sides of the border got together on the frozen ice
formation in the middle of the river just past the American Falls.
That was the thing to do back then. They didn't think it was dangerous!!

Nothing like the Adirondack Park and the Lake George region, prettiest part of NYS IMO. I've been up there for -35*F weather, boy is that hard on a car that has conventional oil in the sump. That is where synthetic oil, and MMO in the sump really shined for me.

Lake George is nice. A former collegue of mine loves to go camping out in Lake George. Couple years ago my parents gave my wife and I a weekend stay at the fancy hotel in Queensbury. Nice place. Of course, Great Escape is a nice day trip also. Missed out on it this year though. Adirondack park is nice. Like the Lake Placid area, but the adirondacks in general are the gem of NY, without a doubt.
