Anyway to your question: I've used 5W20 in an old Ford engine back spec'd from a 5w30 to a 5W20, it actually is running better and using less oil than before. I currently mixed up 5W20 and 5W30 to get rid of some left over qts I had. If your car is under a warranty I would stick to whatever the OM calls for. If not give the 5W20 a try this winter and see how it works for you, if you like it give it a shot year round. JMO
no paranoia and I gave up coffee awhile ago. Its just spooky when somebody online starts focusing on where somebody lives and thinks they are somebody else.
yes, actually I am mid way between Syracuse and Albany. So I am upstate, I only fibbed to try to get you off the topic.
Car is out of warranty. Surpassed the 36K mark quite awhile ago, sometime last year actually. closing in on 60K in less than 1K. I've always been using 5w30 and going by the OLM thus far. Changed my oil this morning with Pennzoil 5w30 regular conventional, which I think I see it referred to as YB (yellow bottle). Friggin' walmart stopped carrying Havoline [censored] it! I started using Havoline a few years back because I read on here it was really good conventional oil.
My concern was using a lighter oil than what its spec'd for and causing any kind of abnormal wear. that's really my main concern. I've read not to use it in motors not spec'd for it. My parents have been buying Honda CRV's for almost 10 years now and those have been running 5W-20 since around 2000 or so, some Fords also. I'm already getting good MPG, around 35 or so in the summer with a 5 spd, so its not why I would look to run 20. Its that the Motorcraft Semi Synthetic is a really good deal.
I looked at a few VOA's comparing 20 and 30 and it seemed the 20 has more moly in it than 30, so I'm guessing that helps with the wear in place of the heavier weight. Kinda new to the chemistry of the oil additive package so don't flame me for seeming off on it. I've picked up a little bit here and there and if you guys can point me to a place here that explains what all of the different things in the additives do, like moly and calcium, that would be extremely helpful.
I have maybe half a quart of the MC 5w-20 leftover from doing my wife's oil a couple months ago so I might top off with it in the Ion whenever I need to, but the Ecotec is [censored] good on oil that I rarely need to top it off. About 1000 miles before I plan on changing the oil I usually toss in a little bit of MMO to keep things clean and my OLM has been running around 7-7500 miles.
