I've searched the used oil analysis and it seems like a lot of the conventional 5w30's turn to 5w-20's in 3000-4000 miles. Would a high mileage oil such as Maxlife 5w30 have a better chance of staying in grade over the same mileage span?

So do the 10w30's...

Oops there I go again.

Synthetics and grp III's have a naturally higher viscosity index. The higher VI the base oil contains the less shear prone VI improvers are needed to meet the grade.

Someone posted a while back that regular maxlife is group I/II plus 15% PAO, does the newer SM formula differ?

I believe the base oil is pretty much the same just a change in the additives to meet SM.

You have sparked my curiosity so I did a search. Some of each 10w30 and 5w30.. I personally like the Maxlife Syn since I got it on clearance

There are more out there. The problem is different vehciles and conditions. Overall I think it holds it's viscosity well while the Maxlife syn is so shear stable it displays an Amsoil like characteristic.

you mean it is so shear stable that it goes upa grade in viscosity?

lol... couldnt resist. Amsoil is good stuff, Ill be trying some very soon, even in my new, under warranty saab.

Exactly With more used oil analysis in the future proof is on the way. Currently working on a 6 month run of undoped(no LC this time) Maxlife syn 5w30 to see where the viscosity ends up. And it's been HOT and ran hard.

The Maxlife is ACEA A3 rated so yes it is capable of longer intervals and will be more resistant to shear than any conventional XW-30 weight.
